Back Up Camera
 

Recently got a touch screen, double din DVD player.
I am thinking of getting a backup camera, as I will be putting on a spare tire carrier sometime soon and know it blocks a lot of the rear window.

What have you guys bought as far as back up cams? (brands or sites)
And where have you placed them?

I've seen a lot of different kinds, from license plate mounts to smaller, bracket style mounts.

Since I'll have the spare on the back and not underneath, I was toying around with the idea of wiring a cam in the hole for the spare tire hoist..

I got an external spare tire carrier that I'll be installing someday and this is great topic. I'll be following to see what you come up with.

I've used the cheap eBay China made ones for $7-$8 and I've used $100+ Pioneer brand ones, and quite honestly on such a small display, it's hard to tell the difference... I mean the quality and clarity of the Pioneer unit over the eBay cheapo unit was a little better, but not worth the money in my opinion. The cheaper China made unit still worked well enough to give a good view of what's behind you.


I can't believe that I don't have any photos of the nicer Pioneer one that I have installed on mine and the wife's Elantra... It's hidden pretty well on the trunk lid right above the license plate between the two tag lights, almost looks OEM. But here's some of the cheaper eBay China unit on my old 2006 Tacoma. The only problem I ever had with the cheap one was the thin metal mount actually breaking after I tweaked it back and forth too many times changing the aim angle of it...

I too plan on adding one to my Blazer soon, also mounting on the spare tire carrier, maybe on a custom bracket that holds it sort of inside the wheel and facing out through the spokes (aftermarket wheel mind you). I have a fancy brake light that I'm going to mount on the carrier that goes behind the wheel :D so I'm going to try and route all the wires INSIDE the tubing of the tire carrier at that time. Not really sure how that'll work out, I'll probably just get lazy and zip-tie it all along the outside of the tubing :P but we'll have to see lol

I've been researching dash cam kits that have front and rear cameras. That could help you see around the spare tire and it's overkill.
