BOSS Audio products any good?
 

Looking for a new amp for my new work big rig. Found the BOSS amps fairly cheap on Ebay.

BOSS AUDIO IMP1600.2

Pros - 2 ohm stable, small in size, looks cool
Cons - never heard of this brand before.

Anyone?

I know they sell em at advanced auto. Depends what you really want. Just music for work and not trying to impress. Should be good enough

They're a cheap, Chinese built flea market brand. They don't typically make their rated power but what's worse is that often times the signals are quite dirty coming out of the amps. Lack of quality filtering circuits and regulation in the amplifier power supplies causes this and while it may or may not be audible (depends on how bad it is and exactly what the noise is) it is still going through your speakers which many times induces undue heat in the voice coils making it easier to drive them to their thermal limits and blow them.

I've seen people use these brands, BOSS, Power Acoustik, Pyle, Pyramid, Performance Technique, SoundStorm, etc. etc. etc. with no issues and I've seen where they caused problems from day one. Personally I'd rather not play Russian Roulette with my money and equipment, but that's me.

Sure, but if it's an OTR truck the OP might be more concerned about it if he's having to listen to and use it 15 hours a day while driving, same with the speakers themselves as well.

OK, so this is what I ended up buying for my work truck. Yeah its a big rig and I spend all week in it. I do have the old stuff from my old truck, but Im giving it back to the blazer, and I gave the old amp and subs to my buddys nephew for his pickup, hes 16 now and just getting an old RCSB 94 chev on the road again.

Anyways, heres my new system, all new stuff.

$184 - Alpine CDE-147BT head unit. Has Tune-It for Android/iPod, Bluetooth, USB and aux in on front, and is a sweet deck for this Alpine-lover.

$Already Owned - All the wiring needed.

Should sound hot I think. Ill be making two single 12" boxes for it because the dual 12 box doesnt fit up on the rear shelves, and in my old truck I had to drill out rivets and bolt the box onto the shelf brackets. It was more work than I wish to do this time, so Ill just have a box on each side rear shelf. Much easier to install and remove when my assigned unit changes next year.

Nice HU for sure. I would've gone a different direction on everything else but I don't believe you're getting hurt on any of it. It should all perform well enough for you.

I've used several of the Hifonics subs over the years and one thing I like about the newer ones is that the enclosure recommendations are actually pretty spot on. The older models manufacturer recommended ported enclosures were horrible alignments. On these, the closer you can get to giving them 2cuft. of NET (not GROSS) internal volume per sub the better you'll like their response. That is if you're looking to go with a ported alignment. I sold a pair of the older Zeus series to a co-worker for his son's vehicle and they're still playing great and on almost twice their rated power.

Just a little tip on the HIFONICS subs..... you will want to take the plastic cover off around the magnet. It rattles like crazy and you can hear it. I took a screwdriver and put it under the plastic part broke it off into pcs it is glued on there pretty good at the top of the magnet but nowhere else. Thats why it rattles it is not held down anywhere around the base.

I would love a design. I will get the measurements of the rear shelves and a couple photos for you this week. I'll go with ported boxes, and if reverse mounted subs will give me smaller boxes that would be super. I can't design this stuff worth crap, but I can get my dad to cut all the MDF and help put er together for sure. 2 cubic foot cubes won't fit, the boxes will have to be shoebox shaped if that gives you an idea. I can get a dual 10 box up on the shelf, but not a dual 12 box. The dual 12 box goes if I remove the shelf, but I don't wanna do that again.

I have a ported box that I put the 2 Hifonics 12's in that measures 36"w x 25" d x 15" h and the port is 5" wide and 18" deep. Let me tell you I have a Sony Xplod ZZR3301 amp that does 330 rms at 4 ohm 600 rms at 2 ohm and 1200 at 1 ohm and I have my controls 1/2 to 3/4 of the way turned up and the head unit sub at -6 and it hits so hard. I put my old lady in the Blazer the other day and it took her breathe away.
