Head unit wiring :P
 

I'm confused on how to wire this head unit. I just got an 83 blazer and someone has installed a head unit straight to the wiring with out any wiring adapter. That head unit is blown I guess and I wanna put my own one in...

In the dash theres these wires
2 fat red wires
1 medium sided red wire
1 medium sized blue wire (bigger than the blue ground wire that's in there as well)
and a set of small yellow and blue wires


None of these wires are labeled. The rest of the wires had other color coded wires spliced into them but those had labels on them like front right + and -



Anyone know a link to help me? I didn't find info on the 2 big red wires and such in the stickys posted...

I would venture to guess that the red wires are something that he may have added to aftermarket. Try testing them with a test light or volt meter. If they send and power with the vehicle off or on, they will need to be adressed. Best thing to if the wire doesnt belong, is to trace it through the vehicle...

I figured it out but geez he has alot of custom wiring done here.

If I had an indicator light, how could I test to see which of these is the switch 12v+? I got a good idea what the Constant 12V+ is.

Hook up your test light or meter to the wire you suspect to be the accessory wire. Then turn the key on and see if you get power. It should be a yellow wire.

go get a $5 multimeter and be damn sure of which wire is which before you damage something.

Yeah... It has alot of custom wires. The head unit that was in there actually works - I plugged it up to my Dodge Crap-us (Stratus..).

From what I found out - he has the power wire running straight to the battery. He also had some other red wires comming out that were merged then connected to the radio... Ofcourse I pulled that radio out so I can't follow his wiring method on another head unit.

I'm sure one of those other wires is a 12V+ switch or some sort.

But thanks Blazin_Jason and bobditts I hope it is only a 5$ tool :P

The blazer also has some sort of idle issue and shuts off if not revved a little for 30 seconds or so... So that'll be another bill to the shop.
