Its better to make/get a new box that is ported than to put a port in a sealed box.
The port size depends on what you want the box tuned to.

look at the manufacturer specs that you can get in the owners manual. JL is pretty right on with their suggested enclosures.

It all depends on the type of sound you are expecting to get from the sub. The W6 is a very powerful driver to start... With a sealed box you will get a more clean, fresh sounding bass note with harder hits. Ported boxes are strictly for SPL (LOUDNESS!), with not a whole lot of SQ (Sound Quality).

If I were you, I would go with a sealed box with the airspace spec'd to the drivers specifications.

onyl if you dont know what you are doing. There are plenty of subs that sound great SQ wise in ported enclosures. In fact, there are some subs that perform much better in ported enclosures than sealed enclosures

a ported box can sound as good if not better than a sealed box. not everybody can build them right is the problem, if you want to make your own box and dont know how to measure and tune for a ported boxor if you want to take up less space you should build a sealed box. but the ported box is nor strictly SPL

I know that ports are not strictly for SPL but at the same time you guys are saying you have to have a well built (and tuned) ported box... I agree with that... On the other hand he was talking about porting his exising box which I was stating is not a very good idea. Thats my opinion, it may differ from you guys's.
