Default Automatic 4 wheel drive?

Probably a stupid question, but I notice some Blazers have just the 4x4 hi, 4x4 low, and 4x2 buttons and some have and automatic 4x4 button. My 1998 does not have the extra button. I have been considering doing a double din conversion and some of the dash bezels I see come with the button. If I installed one like that, would I get the auto function, or is the “brain” of that system elsewhere and the switch is purely a switch? If it is just a switch, as I suspect it is, is there any way to add the auto feature without replacing a bunch of expensive parts?

It's a different transfer case all together. But if you do the "bravada axle swap", you will have AWD, and eliminate the buttons all together.

I kind of thought so, thinking a new transfer case would be more than I want to spend. Nice idea anyway. What is the “bravada axle swap?”

For what it's worth, I use my auto 4x4 like use my auto headlights. I don't... If I want to be in 4x4, I put it in 4 hi or 4 low. I think I've put it in auto 4x4 once just to see if it actually worked, and it did, but personally I like to KNOW that it's either in 4x4 or not, simple as that.
