500$ Craigslist Special.

hey guys, got another jimmy, its been awhile probably 4 years since the last one I've had. this is the 5th one I've owned now.
picked this one up from some guy who didn't care about it or want it for 500$
has 91k original miles and needs pretty much just a bunch of general maintenance, he thought that the tranny was bad and that it had vapor lock issues for some reason ( LOL ) shifts into all gears, and "vapor lock" is probably just bad spider injector assy, as they tend to go out/wear out at about 100k and FI engines dont vapor lock.

picked it up about 3 weeks ago, just got around to doing some stuff on it this weekend.

some pics when i got it:

yes this is how the interior came. no dash panel

dented bumper

picked up some 3.5" backspaced 15x8 Cragars for 50$ on CL might paint or powder them black.. might just leave them jenk-rust-cheapo chrome.

https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1451870729

things i did this week...

New battery, old one froze last week and cracked.
oil change, air filter change
spark plugs
Wires Cap Rotor
Replaced dented rear bumper with junk yard one
replaced missing door handle and missing dash board panels/broken panels with junk yard ones as well as tailgate panel and some other little things.

ordered new tires
ordered struts
ordered 4x4 switch, and tranny filter/pan gasket.

needs:
front fenders rolled/pulled to clear 30's or 235/75 with the offset wheels.
oil cooler lines (big surprise)
serp belt
rear leaf springs (4+1 for towing trailer), and possibly front springs?
spider injector assembly, (has a hard time starting, floods and refuses to start easily if it doesn't start on 1st crank with push of gas pedal and has awful fuel consumption)
coolant flush, and possibly heater core if i find its bad.
floor mats
maybe black junkyard interior swap? because the seats are beat and 3/4 door panels are cracked/damaged.

I figure my whole cost will be just under 2200$ sometime into summer when i'm finished with all the small stuff.
total spent to date on this pile including purchase price: $1583.58 remaining parts needed will probably be around 400$ at least.

really not bad for a beater that's going to get used for camping, hauling snowmobiles and general shenanigans, especially considering all the money spent is just maintenance stuff/tires.

picture of last jimmy I owned which id like to try and get close to as far as looks.

well thats all for now, just waiting on parts to come in the mail.
cheers.

i bought my 93 for $350 like 7 years ago on craigslist. same situation, im still using the same bad transmission :) though technically its bad, over drive is shot, this truck only sees offroad so dont need it anyways

mikmac 01-07-2016 10:45 AM

Ordered multi port injectors and egr gasket today, all the other parts should be at my doorstep today.

Total is up to $1862 with all that's left is oil cooler lines and serp belt as far as I'm aware.

Will have some pics with the new wheels/tires this weekend.

wheels are on.... although i will have to take a saw, heat gun, and baseball bat to the fenders lol, front tires rub bad on the rear of inner fender. might crank the T bar a half inch and see if replacing the shocks today helps before i take a saw to it.. but been here done this before with 3.75" offset so i know it will have to be hacked eventually unless i do a 1" lift.

doing spider injectors and shocks today as well as cleaning the EGR valve.

got the injectors replaced and EGR valve cleaned and installed with new screen gasket.

check engine light came on after i did work today, maybe i forgot a small vacuum line somewhere or electrical connector or something when putting everything back together.

it starts like a regular car now instead of flooding itself or stuttering and stalling, runs WAYYYY better. took it down the street and back and the check engine light is still on. ordered a obd scanner to figure out for sure.

How much was the EGR to change? I have problems starting when mine is warm, it is losing fuel pressure..

That's probably an injector or injector fuel regulator issue, the good egr gaskets with a metal screen are about 15$ I've never replace a egr valve, usually pick them up at the junk yard and ttest them and then clean them if i need to replace one. I think they are something like 60$ new?

Ac Delco multiport spider Injector assy can be had on amazon for 250$ with all gasket. Also multiport injectors are an upgrade for your engine if you replace the poppet style injectors witht them and they will give you slightly better mpg.

The wheels look good. What kind of tires are those?

its been awhile, but ive fixed a lot of things in the past month or so and found a lot of problems from the crackhead PO.

heres a pic of 4wheeling in the mountains.

https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1468372841

pulled the fuel tank to find out the previous owner had ghetto wired the fuel pump with electrical tape.. no connectors, and its an airtex pump... so i ordered a acdelco because the airtex is probably a cause of some of my problems it cuts out sometimes.

the tank had rust in it, pulled one from the junk yard along with new fuel lines and installed a new fuel filter in line.

https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1468372841
heres a pic of the fuel filters screens filled with rust.

ended up replacing the exhaust after the CAT, found out the ignition switch wasnt installed properly from previous owner. the ground was on top of a plastic piece so the switch wasnt sending power to the transmission... one of those moments when you just want to go and slap the previous owner of a car you bought. so that was the "transmission problems" he was complaining about when he sold it to me.

hmm what else have i done, a few junk yard interior fixes. thinking about finding some seats from the yard soon to replace the blown out front ones.

mikmac 07-12-2016 08:24 PM

ordering some new brake pads, brake fluid, and some different wheels this week as the ones i have are way too much offset, ive picked up a new set of front fenders from the junk yard for 40$ to replace the ones i ruined cutting up to make room for the offset on the wheels lol.

15x7 4.5" backspace wheels is what im going with and using 1.5" spacers in the rear, probably putting 31x9.5 or 31x10.5 on the wheels this winter. should be a good setup.

73K5 08-10-2016 08:29 PM

Good grab.

mikmac 12-10-2016 08:51 PM

update finally..

i havent really done much modifications since the ****ty cholo wheels. but i did end up changing the wheels to some 15x7 4.75bs wheels that fit much better.

have done a lot of general maintenance lately, ball joints, idler arm, brake booster, another heater core... all the brake stuff as mentioned before, new fenders! new distributor shaft as there was a reallly really bad misfire problem going on and it was due to the distributor shaft bushing being worn out and excessive radial play. new updated valve body for the transmission, ummm yeah just a lot of ****.

its been a fun project with lots of trips to the junk yard with freinds and its to the point where it is running very very well compared to the other blazers ive had, gets 16.5-17mpg now and i drive it every day and am thinking about selling my brand new car because i dont even drive it any more lol.

has been great for trips in the mountains and exploring.
heres some pics as of lately:

looking good. I wish i could get 16.5 mpg lol. i usually get 15. Some of those pics in Colorado are super pretty. We don't have much of that in New Jersey lol. But we do have long open roads surrounded by fields. Some even without speed limits :)

Haha, i bet theres some decent trails somewhere there, and 15 is usually what i got prior to the distributor fix, maybe it's time for a tune up or something?

Yeh it might be. Can't remember the last time i put spark plugs in. I don't think it has been very long. Its still a work in progress though. Not quite to where i want her but she is getting there :)

As for the trails, yeh there is some decent ones, here and there but New Jersey is pretty flat. I have found some good places where many other people go but im not sure how the local cops feel about it lol. I dont do anything illegal for sure. I think there is just a lot of tree huggers around here :icon_lolsign:

I like the 4th picture down where you are driving through the water. Looks like it could have been a GMC Jimmy ad in a magazine. The rig looks good. I like the wheels you have on it now.

alright, finally decided to put some actual money into this thing, got some 30x9.5x15 kenda Klevers, got a roof basket, locked the rear diff with a Powertrax lockright locker, got a highlift mount on the basket, im building a mount for the spare tire to go up there too and also ordered some rotopax water and gas cans to go up top.

things that went poop since the last update: my door hinges started falling off, replaced pins and welded the hinges back to the body. the fuel pump again, my driver side mirror vs a traffic barrel, the barrel won lol.

anyway heres some pics:

Awsome,,,,, I love these builds, take advantage of everything GM did right and fix all the short comings then you have a nice reliable truck. It's not a pavement princess purchased for 50k but a fun tool around DD that your not afraid to ding, and there's plenty of parts trucks still around. This is what I love about mine. I get about 16 to 17 mpg also so I am on par with everyone else.

Thanks for sharing and keep the updates coming.
