Project big sisters Chev

as promised here is the build, its going to be dragged out over the winter because its too cold to work on it, and its about 1 month old so nothing needs replacing.
So anyone have any suggestions as to what way to run these roof wires so its a clean install and not drilling?
i found a way i think, if i pull back the door seal i can notch the body lip it clips on to 2 mm so the wires tuck through it without being pinched, run them along it to the firewall then through the fender, light switch goes back through the firewall into the truck.

now the light switch requires a 12v power on 1 wire, ground is included with the other harness grounds... where would you guys tap into? i was thinking of just taping onto the DRL, but im not sure if they are on when headlights are on... so i think i have to find something else to tap into.maybe low beams, but i dont know...

Nice! I just read the lights thread lol. Nice truck, Wouldn't even catch my eye if it didn't have the 5.3. Those are nice lights!

I ran my wires to the door, in the weatherstripping to the mirror. Then right into the engine compartment. Ran them along the firewall to the battery.

i havent driven the truck yet, but i have to go pick up some wires so i get to take her for a little spin, the harnesses that the lights came with are too short.
ya i was looking at the weatherstripping and there looks to be enough room to feed the wires through it, one set of lights per side, which is 4 wires per side.
so it looks like thats how ill be doing it.
sucks the wires arent long enough and i have to splice those nice harnesses but i guess thats how she goes.
the battery posts on this truck have a bolt on it that looks like its designed for accessories power , so i dont need to buy a new battery post like on the jimmy.

Why 4 wires per side?

Do you switch them different or all four together? Is there no possibility to ground them on the roof? If not, you can just splice the ground wires together and run a single one. If you switch the lights all together you can even run a single positive wire. So, either one wire if you can ground them or two wires if not...

He's running them as pairs. 2 on one switch and 2 on the other. I think he meant to say 4 wires total?

g_mike 12-15-2010 08:19 PM

1 positive and 1 negative per light, 4 lights, 8 wites total running from roof to under hood wiring harness. 4 wires per side.

its all done, just have a little bit of adding zip ties on the roof and silicone a few spots to make it water tight in the seals again. it was easy but time consuming because i had to splice the PIAA harnesses to run them in the door seals and i also had to extend both of them by 5 feet, the harnesses that came with it were short, i think they come for the lenght needed for putting them on the bullbar.

the remote wires for the on off buttons are tied intot he DRL..i could have put it right to the battery but i didnt want the led running all the time, and i didnt want my sis and her husband to forget them on and kill the battery, this way car turns off so do the lights.
overall it is a very clean install and ill put up pics of under the hood tomorrow.

btw- i took the truck for a drive today and wow, it drives really nice. great power, its only got 3500km on it so i didnt want to push it at all but she gets up to highway speeds extremely easy and sounds sooo smooth. handles great, turns are a little wide but it is a lot longer than my jimmy, but my CTS is probably close to the same length and it has a much tighter turning radius.

ill get a better pic of it tomorrow in daylight, but it looks awesome with these lights on it.

my sister and bro in law were very happy with the install. i used that wiring conduit on all the wiring under the hood, he was showing it to a few people and they all said it looks like a factory wiring harness with the exception of 8 inches of wire going to the battery because i ran out of the conduit so that will be cleaned up next time i get a chance.
i wish i took a pic under the hood but i didnt.

Good job that looks awesome with the bull bar and the light bar. Hope to see more of this truck on here.

g_mike 12-20-2010 01:17 AM

thanks man.
i really want to shorten the wiring harness on the roof so it will all fit under the rack. it looks good the way it is but i just think it would look better if you couldnt see it at all.

you will see more, my bro in law was saying he wants to get some lights on the bullbar, i was thinking of finding small projector lights that can mount on it and putting them on with HIDs in them, or just do HID fogs..we will see.
he was asking me about rims again yesterday, so i think thats going to happen in april. the thing is he has free tires for life with this truck, it was put in the purchase agreement so we have to look into if they will replace with a different tire size, otherwise we are stuck sticking with a 16"rim and just put these tires on them. i dont think its worth loosing free tires over having a 17 or 18" rim or just bigger tires.

i really want to black out the grill and emblems on it, or leave the grill chrome but that chrome trim that separates the headlights and goes around the grill wrap it in black vynal or black vynal tint so it looks like black chrome.
theres a company called 8th day that makes a cadillac vynal emblem overlay that is a skull so if i can find a chevy skull overlay ill grab that for them.
