Brake Dust! What to use!?
 

Ive had my blazer for a few months now and ill be keeping with the stock rims at least through the winter.. ive painted my centercaps black and polished up the rims, but cant get rid of the brake dust thats built up around the inside area of the rims. im sure someones had this problem and has found a product that removes it with ease?

What have you tried? I have a few different products that are available at almost any place that carries automotive cleaners. Most of them have worked quite well at brake dust.

Simple green FTW. Its what I always use. It works wonders in rims. They also have a concentrated Simple Green Max out now that works even better. Only annoying part is you have to dilute it in water because it's so strong.

i havent tried the simple green, but ive tried numerous products i had lieing around the shop. A lot of them helped a bit, but the previous owner let it get quite bad and there are spots on the rims where the dust has made it gray, even black!

Are you talking about the actual inside of the rim or the lip area and other recesses on the outside, highly visible area? If it is in the inside of the rim, I use a wire brush for stubborn stains.

im considering painting the whole thing black lol.. i already did the centercaps and like the look, but i dont know if i'll like the entire thing black

Black rims FTW. You should still remove the brake dust before painting though. You might end up with an improper bond with the primer/paint if you just paint right over the brake dust. Give that simple green a try and see how it works. The longer you let it sit on the rim the better it will work.

will do :) the stock rims are actually pretty gross imo.. not chrome, not black, just like a brushed steel ....

If you want black rims, just let the brake dust build up.

And after you get them clean, switch to ceramic brake pads. Stop more consistantly, quieter, and cleaner.

Castrol Super Clean cuts that brake dust just by showing the bottle to the brake dust, if that dosen't work spray it on. You can spray it on a dry wheel and let sit about a minute then rinse off. Respray and use wheel brush. Then get a power ball and some Comet softscrub. For chrome and bare alloys use powerball and Brasso. Wash the brasso off and it will leave a residue that repels water like wax. Just did this last week on some Prowler wheels. Worked great. Careful the Super Clean will remove the first layer of skin off your hands. Wash it off pretty quickley, unless you are into that sandpaper hand thing.
