getting mirrors black again...

On my 2000it has power defrost mirrors, (the most expensive mirrors). When I got it, the previous owner had tried some kind of cleaner on the mirrors that left faded patches on them. Its not a big prob but it would be nice not to have to look at faded mirrors while I detail, which is about every week. I have tried mothers back to black didn't work very well. Tried Bondo black trim restoration.Nothing seems to work, protectant and shine can hide it if you are looking at it from a good ten feet away. Anyone know of anything that will work?

Are these spots almost like a dirty white or grey color?

rustolium black spray paint. i would sand the mirror smooth first.

IMO I would never use spray paint on my truck and I wouldn't sand down this particular part either for cosmetic reasons (this morror will come out smooth without sanding and you run the risk of deep scratches in the plastic if you sand it). You have two choices 1. Buy new stock or aftermarket mirrors, this is a chance for an upgrade, and have a shop paint them, or 2. Remove them from your truck and have a body shop spray them with the proper paint, a good chance to have them sprayed to match your body color which IMO looks very good, if you have them sprayed black they will probably use an interior type paint because they are tough but almost no gloss like the mirror used to be. If you use spray paint your asking to spray it every six months or so due to fading.

I knew I had a bookmark on this subject (i think) and i finally found it. it is from another s-forum, but it is a great write-up with pics! It works wonderfully!! Cleaning Exterior Plastic

There is a few mentions of off-color language, but nothing that would be deemed nws.

You wont have any scratches if you wet sand it with cutting gel. We would do this all the time at the limo shop on older vehicles and you couldn't tell the difference between the spray painted and old.

True, but the mirrors on our trucks are textured already, you don't need to sand them to get a completly smooth surface. My truck is proof.

Have you tried Mothers Back to Black. I used it on my mirrors and cowl strip and that was three weeks ago and they are still black as can be. Even after many rain storms, including this dreary cold rain storm the north east is enduring right now.

Doh, didn't rear you're post clearly enough. I went back and saw that you used it alreday. Sorry, I don't know how I missed that.

Thats were the rustolium comes in. When it dries its textured

RUSTolium is as implied, good with rust. Metal rusts. Our mirrors are plastic. Plastic does not rust. Spray paint should not have a textured appearance or feel after being applied, unless the label specifically states that it is a textured paint, such as hammered look paint and stone feel paint. Which brings us back to, why would you ever use spray paint on the exterior of your truck? A. Spray paint WILL fade leaving you with the same problem as before, only now wide spread (even if you use the cheap spray clear coat). B. Spray paint WILL flake off. Leaving you with a second problem, beside the fading. C. Spray paintWILL look completely out of place. It WILL NOT be the same sheen and gloss as the rest of the black trim. If you take it to a shop, if they paint them, they will make sure the finished product willmatch the rest of the black trim on the truck.

Yeah Rustolium paint works terrible on plastic pieces. Been there done that, its a waste of money. However, if your not wanting to spend 100 or so to have the mirrors painted professionally you could get some Krylon Fusion paint. Ive used it on numerous plastic pieces that sit outdoors all year in michigan weather. So far none of them have faded any. This paint doesnt flake off. It the paint actually bonds to the plastic on a molecular level, much like VHT paint that is used on interior plastic trim panels and vinyl.

Now that is a very intelligent choice! I am currently spraying my interior with FUSION, I have used it on plastic since it first came out. If he didn't want to go the shop route, FUSION was going to be my next suggestion. Great minds think alike 982DRBlack!

Well I agree wouldnt use spray paint on my mirrors. But I did use Plastics I think or somthing likr that on my tail light guards, a couple coats and a couple coats of clear plastics protector and they look awsome, havent faded or chiped or whatever. I also let them sit after final painting for about a week and then put them on the truck.

I got em black again.

Heres what I used:

1. Dish washing liquid- (to remove bug and sheen residue)
2 rubbing Alcohol- (to remove bugs and sheen reside because Dawn didn't work too well.)
3. Polyblack trim & tire restorer
4. Ibiz Sheen

The polyblack was a product I picked up at a car show. Oddly enough, the car show was at the dealership that sold my Blazer when it was new.
The IBIZ Sheen is a product I picked up at the Auto Expo in Raleigh.

BTW when I got the Ibiz Sheen I also bought Ibizsynthetic cleaner wax which is IMO one of the best waxes out there.

I got annoyed with all the store products for plastic shine....so I went ahead and bought a can of Krylon High glass Black spray paint and painted all black plastic surfaces and it looks AMAZING. So far it's lasted about 6 months without any signs of wear.

Hope that was Krylon Fusion........

Oh yes it was Krylon fusion. I didn't just paint it with regular Krylon paint! Sorry forgot to mention that part.

would that krylon fusion work for the rear plastic pannels behind the rear windows?
