Engine Block Heater in Maine??

I have a 2002 2 dr 2wd blazer, and in the fall i will be going to college in maine. I live in baltimore now, where it gets cold and snowy in the winter. it has only been in baltimore for a year and did fine in the winter last year, but it will be spending four years in maine, in the cold. its life before i got it it lived in hilton head south carolina where it was garage kept the entire time. is it a good idea to get an engine block heater for when im in maine? my grandfather mentioned i should get one, he is who i bought it from.

I grew up in Maine, are you going to UMaine Orono? I lived about a half hour from there. There was a heater (in-line) on my 84 s-10. I used it the first year until I got a new battery and then I didn't need it anymore. I wouldn't bother with one now.

a good battery and the proper oil for the temperature and you don't need one... I lived an hour north of Presque Isle and have never used one since I had my first car....and it even came with one...

I will be going to Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. I ask this question because i went home from school yesterday to get lunch and i pulled in the garage and i noticed the engine was idling real low at like 400. it is normally at 600. then it decided to drop rpms all the way to 200 then surge quickly back to 800 then to 200 then 800 hundred then it stalled. it has only ever stalled once before. yesterday it was about 19 degrees, the coldest its been this winter so i dont know if that has anything to do with it.

if the engine was ran for some time before you got home then it was not the cold but some other issue the truck was having... the cold will only affect the engine on startup (cold oil is not very viscous)

to home and school at 11:30 in the afternoon is about five minuets
