Fuel Injection cleaning?
 

<FONT face="Times New Roman, Times, serif">I was told by a mechanic that I needed to have my fuel injectors cleaned on my 92 blazer. I see those bottles of stuff at the auto parts store that say fual injector cleaner and stuff like that. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge if these worked or not because I would like to save some money by not taking it into a mechanic and paying $100 to get it fixed if I could buy somethingoff the shelf that would be ok. I dont know if it would make any difference but my engine is the High Output one.</FONT></P>

They work....I usually get the fuel injector cleaner, octane booster and the gas treatment every sooften. I noticed quite a bit of difference. Even on my average fuel economy...I usually get the STP but they have something like Nitro Boost or something like that that's supposed to work well. The Prestone octane booter works great....i even use it in myATV once in a while.

does fuel injector cleaner clog up the sparkplugs with carbon or anything??

THE REAL FUEL INJECTOR CLEANING ISNT DUMPING A BOTTLE OF CLEANER IN YOUR GAS TANK, ITS ACTUALLY TAPPING INTO THE FUEL RAIL AND USING THE CONTENTS ALONG WITH THE SLIGHTEST AMOUNT OF FUEL TO KEEP THE CAR BARELY RUNNING IN ORDER TO DO THE SERVICE. IT COSTS ABOUT 100 BUCKS HERE AT MY DEALERSHIP, BUT IM SURE YOU COULD GET IT CHEAPER ELSWHERE.. HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED IF YOUR BLAZER GOT OVER 50K.

I just revisited this thread from awhile back because I have an occasional miss in my '91 S-10 Blazer 4.3L. I mainly notice the miss when sitting idling at a stop light, and it kind of scares me because it makes the Blazer shudder for a second and then it goes back to normal. I also notice some roughness of idling when first starting up in the morning, which improves when the car is warmed up.

I have fairly recently had plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, PCV valve, and air filter replaced. So I'm thinking what's next is fuel injection. I am interested in the procedure described in the previous post, but don't really understand it and can't find anything about it in my owner's manual or Haynes manual. I see on an old tune-up receipt from the previous owner a "fuel kit" listed under parts, but no description of what it was used for. I assume this was part of the injector cleaning procedure, am I right? This was not part of my last tune-up, but the mechanic did mention it when I asked about fuel injection. What is the fuel rail, how do they tap into it, and what exactly do they do? Is it something we can do ourselves?

Someone told me that dumping a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank can loosen up "crud" in the gas tank and clog up the fuel filter. Is that true? If not, should I do this as a temporary measure until I get the service done? I did it once before, but don't know if it did anything.

I am going in for an oil change and some other stuff tomorrow, so will bring up the subject, but just wondered what you all might have to say.

grkblazer is talking about a motorvac. its a machine that dealerships have which runs a high strength cleaner through your fuel rail and injectors. it cleans all the gunk and carbon out and really makes a difference on high milage engines. we only use it on cars that really need it, because it is kinda pricey. but using the fuel injector cleaner a couple times a year helps too. although ive never heard of it causing a clog in the filter. just remember to change your fuel filter about every 30,000 miles. oh, and about the fuel rail, its just what the injectors are mounted to and holds the correct fuel pressure at the injectors.

Like, how pricey? If it's the $100 the first post mentioned, that wouldn't be too bad, I guess. (I forgot to ask about that today at the shop, or is it only available at dealerships?) But thanks for your suggestion about the bottled cleaner, maybe I'll try that again. I recently replaced my fuel filter, so it's got a ways to go before it's clogged up. Anything else that could be causing an occasional miss at idle, now that I've had all the tune-up parts replaced?

Fuel injector cleaner does work for minor things. .. For example if you read my post on "check engine light", i continuously was getting a code for "missfire in cylinder 1" even after I did the plugs and wires. 3 bottles of fuel system cleaner later and the light hasn't turned on since. Depending on how serious of a cleaning you need, concentrated fuel system cleaner is fairly inexpensive and should be the first thing you try.

Thanks, I'll try the fuel system cleaner again...... it's been several months since the first time and that was before I got the tune-up. I'll go back and read your post on "Check Engine Light", too.
