Temp gauge not working and running rich

I have a Chevy van its a 95 g20 with a 305 and the temp gauge is not working , and once it gets warm it runs like crap . I went to autozone and bought the temp sensor but they gave me the wrong one , they gave me the one that goes into the intake and I need the one thats on the block . I looked at my other Chevy and it has a aftermarket gauge in the block and then the regular one on the intake . My question is how would I go about hooking up the aftermarket gauge , and still make the computer know the engines temp . I'm guessing the sensor on the intake does that , I don't have a book for this van yet so any help would by appreciated . And the sensor I bought this morning fits the intake .

Hey gene Hows every thing?

I found this on the fullsize chevy forum hope it helps

The sensor for the gauge in the dashboard is in the driver-side cylinder head, near the #3 and #5 exhaust ports. The sensor for the computer is in the thermostat housing or in a hole to the passenger side of the thermostat housing. This applies to all CCC (Computer Command Control) Chevy small-block V-8s.

Everything is great , and thats what I thought but I wasn't certain . So I will just install the new aftermarket temp gauge and put the new sensor that I bought on the intake . Thanks for taking the time to find that for me .
