Default '95 Blazer - Thermostat

Hey y'all, gotta quick question. I think I need to replace the thermostat on my engine, I was told by a couple people that, to check this, I could simply pull the old thermostat and drive around without it for a bit to see if my engine runs normal. Just wondering if someone could confirm or deny this for me, since most cars I know of, you'd need to dump the coolant to do this.

T-stat is there for a reason. If youre going to go through the trouble of taking the old one out, and putting the truck back together to see if it makes a difference, why not just spend the ten bucks and put a new one in? I can change the t-stat in my 97 4.3 in about ten minutes and only loose about a quart of coolant. I dont drain it at all.
