03 engine into 99

First post here guys.

I bought a 99 4 door in excellent condition. Engine has a rod knock. The guy I bought if from included a spare engine. Engine is an 03.

What am I gonna run into with this swap?

I can see the newer engine doesn't have the EGR valve on the intake or the EGR ports on the exhaust manifolds. I'd like to use the newer stuff but don't want a constant SES.

Thanks

Swap the intake, exhaust manifolds, and block sensors from your engine onto the '03 engine and drop it into the truck. Swap oil pans if one is a 4x4 and the other is a 2wdr. Might be a good time to replace the oil pan gaskets and replace the rear main seal while the engine is out.

I swapped in a '85 4.3L into a '93, I kept the '93 intake, exhaust manifolds, and block sensors. My son has been driving it for over a year now.

The knock sensors are different. The 99 uses the old style with 1/4" NPT threads. The 03 block uses the new style sensor with a 5/16" thru bolt. Think I have this figured out though.

The 03 engine has only 30K miles on it; would you think the oil pan gasket and rear main seal need replacement? Is there a preferred manufacturer on either of these?

It couldn't hurt to swap the seals while you have the engine ona stand, but honestly, I have never seen one of these oil pan gaskets or rear main seals leak on a modern 4.3. Of course if you do change them, I'd recommend GM seals, if you don't want to spend the dough on GM seals...you're probably better off leaving the existing ones on it.

Well, since I'm gonna use the 99 intake, I might as well swipe the good injectors from the 03 intake.

I replaced the injector spyder on a 96 I had without issue, but I'm having a hard time getting the upper part of the intake off on this one. Fuel lines are out and bolts also. It will move, but doesn't seem to want to pop off. Am I missing something?

Thanks

Mostlikely the plastic upper plenum is stuck on the center section of the injection spider. You may have to use some WD40 and let it soak for a bit.
