Default 1998 Chevy Blazer 2wd Tranmsission Is About Gone Need Opinions

Hi my cuz scored a good deal on a great running 1998 chevy 2wd blazer 216k miles the engine runs good no check enigne lights or nothing we got it for $375 cash from a car lot it was a repo any way the only catch was it dosent have Reverse so he said he could live with that as long as it last about a month to he gets his student loans in and get another transmission any way we was driveing it and took it down the highway and it made a loud yelping dog kinda sound and was slipping like crazy and would'nt go when pushing the gas so we stoped and put it in the lowest gear and it worked then got off the highway then it started working fine again so i told him to baby it till we get another trasmission so i was wondering is u guys know what all year models of blazers that share the same tranmission and what other trucks out there that use the same transmissions as the 98 blazers? like jimmys and maybe s10 pickups ?

Sounds like the Reaction Sun Shell went, that would explain no reverse and you would only have 1st and 3rd gear. Since it is a 98 you will need to look for a 4l60E transmission with PWM on the front pump housing on the transmission, and also if you found 1 out of a 2wd like yours would make it an easier swap

Most gm vehicles around the same time use similar transmissions.... I know of a shop in IL that gives a rebuilt tranny for around 500-700 and they have a full warranty with it...

Well after some research it seems from 1995 to 06 all use the 4l60E. I found a
01 sonoma part out and they want $300 for the tranny and its a 4l60E as well so im asumeing its the same as whats in the blazer.

i just picked up a trans for mine from a salvage yard and i only paid $250 for it and its a fairly new tranny plus it had a gm replacement badge and papers on when it was put in. idk if u will get that lucky but if u search around a little bit sometimes u find a really good buy.

I never recommend going with an older transmission due to the updates that have occurred throughout the life of the 4L60E. While a 95+ transmission will bolt up, your truck has the two peice main case which has a full circle, removable bell housing. Somewhere in the 96-97 time frame, GM switched to this style of bell housing so you should stick with that style above all else. But I would try for a newer transmission.

So long as you get the transmission from a truck, you should be good with any 4L60E application up until the end of production. Some of the 4L60E's from cars had a form of torque management in them, but they should have a different plug on them.

That pretty much answered my question, but while looking for transmissions on craigslist, some people said green plug some said gray plug, what is the significance of the color of the "plug" or is that even a valid question?
