4.3l engine compatability

I have a 2000 blazer 4x4 with4.3l/autothat needs an engine. What years of engines will be a DIRECT replacement longblock from throttle body, to oil pan? Also, what all vehicles will have this motor?

I was also wondering if all 4.3l block/head assemblies would work if I transfer my intake manifold, oilpan, etc.. over to it. Any ideas?

THANKS!

RE: 4.3l engine compatability

Anything '96 to mid '02 will work for a direct drop in replacement. The mid-'02 thru current motors have different EGR systems and different machining for the knock sensors. You would have to swap over the intake manifold and rewire the knock sensor to the newer style (solder on the newer style connector) to make use of the latest engine. If you were to get a mid-'02 to current engine, you would want to swap out the MFI injection spider into your intake to take advantage of the updated fuel system which is backwards compatible with your current engine.

Basically you are looking for any 4.3L used from '96 thru '01 in any RWD or 4WD application from GM.

I have a 98 (W)with a bad motor, I would assume 96-mid 02 would fit my truck also? Thought

I read that 99 & newer used metric trans & starterbolts? Same pattern just metric threads?

Thanks,
Ken

RE: 4.3l engine compatability

If you have the aluminum oil pan, then any block with an aluminum pan up until mid-02 will work. I believe that the pan can be swapped over as well, but you may have to swap the front timing cover.

As far as the metric trans & starter bolts, I believe that started before the '96 SCFI motor, but could have been when the transmission changed to the 2 piece main case design and the oil pan went to an aluminum piece.

I found an engine today. The guy said its a 2002 vortec. Now how do I tell if its an early 02, so it would be a direct replacement for mine, or a late 02, that I would have to swap intakes?

RE: 4.3l engine compatability

If it has the EGR valve on the front of the intake, it should be a direct swap. If it doesn't, then you may have problems with the intake. You may also have to use the knock sensor from the 2002 and get a new connector as I believe that the machining for the knock sensor location changed, but I have not compared the two...

If the engine front beside the water outlet tube looks like this, then you have a later than mid-2002. If there is an EGR valve attached there, then it is before the mid-2002 engine.
