Thumbs down 4wd, s10 4dr.

i was in the country, on a grassy hill. i put it in 4wd and tried to get up a small incline. the rear wheels spun, mostly the left rear tire, and i could not get up the incline. Question: is the 4wd not workin correctly? THE indicator light was on the dash switch. I dont know if there is a locker or posi present. I need some help with this

well, an easy way to tell if the front wheels are pulling is to put it in 4-wheel drive in a wet spot and have someone tell if the front wheels spin when you gas it, or jack the front end up, put it in 4-wheel and see if you can spin the front drive shaft. if it spins, then somethings not right. start with diaphragm located under the battery. then actuator on top of the transfer case. is it push button or lever. how many buttons?

Default 4wd,s10 4dr.

thank you for the ideas. the only thing i found under the battery is a charcoal canister for fuel vapors. i found a round, softball size, thing on the right inner fender wheel well cover. is this the diaphram? it has 2 vaccum hoses on it.

If i jack up the front end, i see the front drive shaft. On the dash is a rocker switch for 2wdr and 4wdr. no push buttons. I can hear some click when i switch to 4w dr, rocker switch lits up, so i am guessing the actuator is kicking in. And when i go back to 2w dr,i hear a click .

I guess, i will have to jack up all 4 wheels, start engine, put it in 4 w dr. and see if the front wheels and back wheels move. I will be out in the country workin on this by myself.

if the front wheels dont move, then i got some parts to get. to diag the
plastic ball,
can i connect the two vac. hoses together off the round plastic ball to test if the front wheels move? If they do then the plastic ball thing is bad correct? let me know if this is one way to test the ball . thanks again kyjonesy
