84 S10 Blazer Baffles the Imagination!

OK I have a '84 S10 Blazer, 6 cyl. One fine day I started and let it warm up for a few minutes and it died.

It then wouldn’t start again so I changed the cap, rotor, (has new wires), coil relay, (ignition module checked out OK at the parts store). The problem turned out to be the coil. It was firing but the spark was week.)

I TDC the engine, put the Distrib. Back in with the Rotor pointed at the #1 on the cap, starts right up, but when you give it gas, it backfires through the carb (GAS!) and dies. It seems like it’s out of timing. (I've actually put in quite a few distribs. in my life)

I’ve been fiddling with this for days now and I even called my neighbor who knows cars as good as I do (I’m 50 and have worked on them since 16).

Anyhow, ANY IDEAS???? (Yes I tried advancing the gear on the distrib. No change) Appreciate any thoughts on this matter since I’m baffled as heck!

I didn’t know there were Blazer fans like myself, Very Cool indeed!

1. Is this a carburated vehical?
a. Backfire can be caused by a lean condition. (Carburator or Fuel Injected)
1. Float Level (Carburator)
2. Inlet needle valve stuck (Carburator)
3. Ports clogged or pluged. (Carburator)
4. Faulty Accelorator Pump. (Carburator)
5. Clogged fuel filter (carburator or Fuel Injected)
6. Weak fuel pump. (Mechanical Pump or Electric Pump)

b. Might be time to get a rebuild kit and thoroughly clean and adjust the carburator.

2. Timing chain jumped would be my next suspect.
a. If your at TDC and the timing marks all line up, rotor pointing to number 1 plug and the Intake & Exaust valves are closed. I doubt that you have a timing issue. Especially if it starts and idles just fine. I would suspect a fuel delivery problem.

I don't think there was even a TBI option in 84 but yeah my carburator has caused me some problems in the past mine was out of time and the idle was off it wouldn't start. I got mine to start when the timing was way off if it was warm and I held open the choke gave it the gas and cranked it.

@ 84blazers10 was it hard pulling out the distrib? im going to pull mine out soon on my 88 but dont wanna mess up the timing

For the backfiring through the carb, have you checked into a possible timing chain problem? How many miles do you have on it?

Did you every figure out what's causing your backfire? Did you get it fixed? If yes, what did you have to do to fix it? Enquiring minds would like to know.

Wasn't really that hard no.

Either mark the orientation of the rotor on the block or firewall when you remove the dist. and do not rotate the engine once you pull the dist. or bring the engine to TDC before you pull the dist. The rotor should be pointing to the No. 1 plug wire on the cap. Once again do not rotate the engine and with the dist. removed. Re-install the dist. so the rotor is once again pointing to the No. 1 plug or your ref. mark. Engine shoud start right up and you might have to adjust the timing a little bit. In order to adjust the timing make sure you disconnect the EST timing wire inside the passenger compartment underneath the glove box just below the top edge of the carpet.

Thanx so much Mr. Vis.
I haven't tried goofing with it yet but I guess I'm gonna tackle the carb next. I really appreciate all the feedback! I'll keep you updated!

Happy Holidays Everyone!
