94 Blazer 6.5 Diesel problem

I have a 94 Blazer with the 6.5 turbo diesel. My problem started a few days ago while sitting at a stoplight, the engine stalled (it did not sputter, it just shut down, like someone turned it off). I cranked it for about 5-10 seconds in neutral, then put it in park, turned the ignition key to off, then tried again. This time it fired up, I went about a half mile and it did the same thing again while I was rolling (just like it was shut off). I went through same procedure as above and it started again. I continiued on that day without a problem (stopping and starting several times). I had no problem for 3 days at all (normal to work drive routine). Fourth day it did it once throughout the day, on fifth day the problem happened about six times in row while rolling down highway, then would not start at all(cranked, but would not turn over or even pop). I had it towed home, where I tried to start again, this time it started right up and ran for about 10 minutes before I turned it off (I did not drive it anywhere because I did not want to be stranded again).

I know that it is a lot of info, but wanted to provided a detailed look at the problem. Any ideas??? Fuel pump, fuel relay, fuel filter??

Thanks for any insight!!

Any and all ideas welcome!

This sounds very similar to what my dad was just going through with his new pickup (2008 K2500HD diesel). He was getting a water warning (has a light for it in the dash) and it was missing on him. It never did stall, but I know what happens in our tractors and tractor trailers. Diesel engines do not like water in their fuel. I would change out the fuel filter(s) and add some diesel specific water treatment to the tank and see if that helps.

RE: 94 Blazer 6.5 Diesel problem

FYI out there for all you Diesel owners. I have found a lot of other owners that have experienced the same problem. It deals with the fuel system (namely the injector pump, PMD, OPS [oil pressure sensor, which is somehow linked to the lift pump] and the lift pump [which helps get the gas to the injector pump is about halfway in between the tank and IP]. It seems the PMD which is mounted in the IP overheats after a while and stalls the car just like someone turned the key off. I tcools fairly fast and you can then start the vehicle again. I found a lot of info on dieselplace.com if anyone has specific problem with diesels!

Thanks for helping.

RE: 94 Blazer 6.5 Diesel problem

I work at car/truck salvage yard and it seems we sell alot of those injector pumps, (when we have 'em) which leads me to believe that they are part that is prone to failure. In fact we sold one of those pumps just the other day. I'm assuming this is the same engine used in the full size trucks. I also know that there is a trick to removing/installing the pump that doesn't require the removal of the timing cover. Instead, you access the 3 bolts that hold the pump shaft to the gear that drives the pump through the water pump outlet. I may be wrong about that though. Hope I could help.

Actually you are close, you access the 3 bolts through the oil neck inlet. I have the full size blazer. I would believe that the mid-size would also use the IP, but for a different engine because I don't think the 6.5 turbo diesel went into the mid-size. from what I have read the IP would be a very popular part!
