97 Blazer transmission shifting

I have a 97 Blazer auto transmission, with the 4.3. I am trying to get an idea of the problem before I send it to the shop. When driving after it has been sitting, the transmssion shifts thru all the gears fine. After driving a couple miles, I lose 1st gear and overdrive. 2nd and 3rd work fine. It takes off in 2nd gear and then 3rd thats it. It can sit a couple hours and shift fine for a couple miles. Looking for some suggestions.

mine did something similar and it was my ignition harness... the 97 seems to have alot of issues with thoose... also do a filter change... 15.00 i think plus 5 quarts.. very simple to do... how many miles?

RE: 97 Blazer transmission shifting

Thanks for reply. The Blazer has 183,000 miles, but tranny was rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago. Here is more info on the problem. I drove it today to get more info on what exactly it is doing.I can put it in 1st manually, and it will take off in 1st. I shut the motor off and started it back up about 3 minutes later and it started in 1st. Down the road, it messed up again. I did notice the ignition switch is loose. You can pull it in and out about a 1/4". Don't know if this is normal or not. What about a shift solenoid? Read somewhere that one of them controls 1st and overdrive.

Had codes ran today, and it came back as a transmission shift solenoid malfunction. Hopefully this solves the problem.
