Anyone used a marine spec. 4.3 in their Blazer?
I asked my nephew about the cam when I picked up the engine because he had another cam laying there to go with it. He said I would need to change it to get any low RPM HP. The one that's in it is designed for top end HP because boaters usually run WOT when skiing or towing. The rest of the engine is identical except for the four bolt mains which everyone knows made the 350 such a strong engine. I'm hoping this is a good thing for me. We'll know when we get it done. Just have to wait another week for a free weekend.
I know I will have to change the oil pan to work in my 4X4 but what difference is there in the oil pump? Or is it just the length of the pickup tube. I have had conflicting stories. It would seem with the deeper pan I will need a longer pickup tube.
The first motor I got turned out to be for an earlier Blazer. The first clue was when the intake manifold would not fit. The bolts went in at an angle on the new ones and the old motor's were vertical. The mounting holes were different too for the accessories. My nephews guys had pulled the wrong one off the rack. After another three hour round trip to exchange them I came home with the right one. We stabbed it on Sunday after getting all the goodies changed over but the distributor and intake. This one went right in. It does have all the right holes and now we just have one more day of work left to be running. One more nice thing about this marine engine is the powder coated finish. It looks nice too. They do that for salt water applications. The later engines also have the correct cam in them already so we didn't have to change that. We did have to change the timing cover as the marine one didn't have a place for the cam position sensor either. It looks like the plan is coming together, just one more day of hooking things up. I'll update when we get done.
Everything bolted up exactly the way it was supposed to. All the electrical was the same. Did not have to change anything. When we got the correct motor, we didn't have any problems. The guys at the reman company misunderstood what motor I needed and swapped for the right one so I am rolling again. You have got to have a motor for a 96 - 2000 Blazer to fit in a 96. Some 95s are the same as 94 and down. They will not work if you are using any of your old parts and computer.
We got it started and it was making an awful ticking noise for about 30 min. We decided that the lifters had been sitting for a long time in the warehouse because they started to quiet down and by the time I got it home had stopped the noise all together. I do know that this is the last time I will attempt a motor swap in a Blazer though. I don't care what my wife says, if I buy another used 4X4 it will have to be a Jeep. They are made to work on in the field if you have to. My son changed his Cherokee in two and a half hours in his garage with a cherry picker and a motor stand. There is just more room to work on one of them. Right now I am glad this is done and hope it lasts a very long time. My 4X4 works better too. I didn't know it but the vacuum line for my front axle was off under the battery box. Now things are hooking up like they are supposed to in there. All in all I have to declare success on this operation. Marine engines work great.

Okay! Did you use the Marine intake.. or did it come with it:?
- never mind. Not using my head. You bought a long block. Never come with intakes.
For me that would be the big thrill... Real Fuel-Rail injection.

You are correct. This was a new long block. I had to use my old intake system. That's okay though, it runs great. Got 17.6 mpg on the first trip I made. That's better than the old engine did. It has smoothed out completely within the first 150 miles. I think this one is a winner.
i have three v6 mercruzers dead in my shop awaiting rebuilds here in aus and they are all different. 2 of them are balance shaft engines one isn't three different cam numbers and slight diffrencess all over them. what cam it has will depend on what boat the engine was origanaly intendid for and a engine swap in a blazer is a crapy job.save the headache change the cam first and know what you have from the start
