Default Busted Tranny?

Tomorrow me and my dad are going to look at a 96' blazer wich can only shift into gear 1 and reverse.

Anyone know if there are some common problem that causes this or will the tranny have to be switched ?

Thanks for replys!

Maybe you have a bad VSS? In the older trannies that were hydraulically shifted, I would probably suspect the governor went bad because pressure from there is what's makes an upshift, and if you had a bad one, no matter how fast you were going, the bad governor would think you were at a stand still so it would always stay in first.

With the newer electronically shifted trannies, the VSS has replaced the governor in a tranny. So it could possibly be that.

Just my two cents.

Default again!

Hi again,

That was my thoughts aswell.. Is there a way to test this? Eg, can i shift manually or rev it up to some rpm in neutral ?

If the transmission is broken no way i can manually shift it right?

Thanks for replys !

Well if it were the VSS, your speedometer wouldn't be right, or more than likely not at all.

Have you tried driving in a manual gear you selected like 3rd or 2nd?

Also, you could try a stall test to see if the clutches are holding.

HI tand thanks for the reply!

I dont have the car at home its a car i might buy.. So the tests i can make to rule out that the transmission is totally wasted are verry helpful

If the VSS Sensor is broken wouldnt cause the km/h meter to function right?
And if i can change gear manually it should also be Ok?
Woud this give me some trouble code you think ?

A VSS sensor can be slightly off and not affect things all of the time. The fact that the speedo jumps points squarely at the VSS sensor. It could be the sensor itself being dirty which you have cleaned or it could be a wiring issue.

Here is a schematic view showing the location of the VSS sensor (item 8):

Thanks for the image and help swartlkk !

If i decide to replace this sensor, will i have to remove the engine to get to the transmission?
Will the computer spit any troublecode if the sensor is bad?

Thanks!

you don't work on vehicles much do you? or not RWD ones.

just slide under the truck, you'll find what you're looking for quite easily. don't have a pic of it, but i'm sure Kyle will post one up shortly (i swear he's got every pic ever published by GM!)
