carburetor rebuild
 

i have an 85 blazer s-10 which i purchased a few months ago. about a month ago, it died right after i started it. it had the problem where the engine would keep running as long as i kept my foot on the gas after starting, but would die immediately after i let off the gas.

i asked a few people what the problem might be and determined that the carburetor was the problem. being a complete beginner to automotives, i decided to rebuild the carburetor by myself to gain some experience in the matter.

long story short, i rebuilt the carb using a standard rebuild kit and replaced almost everything that was included in the kit. however, i was unable to find my specific model number in the list for adjustments and skipped most of the adjusting, thinking it would keep the previous settings without adjustment.

after putting the carburetor back in and connecting everything, the truck fired up but blew fire out of the carb and spit gas everywhere. i asked a friend what it could be and he thinks it might be easily fixed by adjusting the idle screw but i'm not exactly sure how to go about that.

am i beyond help or can someone point me in the right direction? is there a pictorial that would help a complete novice in this matter?

sounds like its out of adjustment. sounds more than the idle screw. it would either flood itself or not have enough gas. the screw controls the air to fuel mixture ratio

Honestly it sounds like your better off finding someone that knows what there doing. I would go on Craigslist and put up an ad saying you'll give someone 20 bux to tune your carb if you don't know anyone... Good job on rebuilding it and getting everything back together, I remember my first carb rebuild I had my buddies dad walking us through it. Lot's of little parts.

i guess i'll pull it again and try some random adjustments.
at least i know gas is flowing through it, which is better than when i started.

or you could find one at a junkyard and use that one or try to get the adjustment as close as possible, random is not always the greatest.

Get to a bookstore or part store and get a book on carbs. Particularly the Rochesters. They are very helpful.

i took your advise and did a little reading on how carburetors work and found that both flaps (air holes) are supposed to be closed but one of mine was wide open. i think i didn't rotate something before i fit the rods onto it, or possibly the choke thermostate was not at the right position before i screwed the cap on.

either way, i'll have to pull it apart and start over. but it will be a lot easier having done it already, and feeling a lot more confident about being able to put the puzzle back together.
