Down hill hold back
I just got back from a little mountain ride and finally remembered to get to my computer and ask............
When coming down off a steep road, I have learned to use my gears.........when shifting my blazer [2001 3 button]........down to second and first, it doesn't hold back like, i am used to..............when i drop down to first gear, it gears down and holds me back, but soon it will loose "hold back", then kick back down again..........I'm talking of speeds no faster than 5 to 10 mph.......... Does the computer regulate this action......or do i have a converter not functioning right...... I've had fwd vehicles for fifty years......and have been traveling the same roads all these years and have never had to use low range for "hold back" on a road when four wheel drive was not needed.......... I guess maybe I'll have to change my ways............or change my brakes:icon_smile: |
What kind of roads are you traveling where you need to go no faster than 10 mph? First gear won't seem like it is holding back until you get a bit faster or you shift to 4lo. At speeds below 10mph, you won't burn up the brakes.
I've been down more than a few "roads" where I needed to keep my speed that low and only used my brakes. I was already in 4hi or 4lo at the time and just used my brakes. |
The shelf between cripple creak and canon city drops from 9500' [is that right for cripple creak??] to about 5200' in canon............is just one.......that i drive frequently ......lots of washout and washboard.......
If that is the way these trannys are set up, I guess I'll have to use low range for a few miles......... AJBERT you need to take a ride to cripple creek and down the shelf to canon city, if you have seen it yet, it's a nice trip......... |
I've been to Cripple Creek many time, but never continued on to Canyon City. I just might have to make the trip when I get a chance.
I have had to shift down coming off of Pike's Peak when I go up there fishing. 2nd gear works most of the time and a few spots I shift down to 1st. Off road, I have never shifted down. |
If you haven't been down the shelf, then you need to give it a go.............you just have to watch for the tourists [that someone in Canon is sending up there] , more this year than I've ever seen........they will either freeze in the middle or they refuse to role over a rock and scuff the new tires.............The shelf is only 10 or so miles, then you hit black top for 10 or so.............and a pretty drive thru red canon park area........ about 25 miles from cripple creek..........and takes a good hour.....if you don't stop.....and gock.....
