Engine balance shaft

Does anyone know how to tell if your engine has a balance shaft without tearing it down? Mines a 2000 zr2 4.3

It has one - and it's second design. why do you ask?

I understand.

I recommend these (reuse the balance shaft gears). I degreed my cam and these gears gave correct cam timing straight up.

Thanks

Here's the stock cam specs for comparison. Note J604D is valve timing at 0.006 lift (same as Comp cams). However, Comp Cams duration listed is at 0.050.

http://www.federalmogulmp.com/en-US/...-%20CS1572.pdf

So:

ID / IO / IC / EO / EC / Lift / Intake Center / Lobe Separation / Duration (0.050)
Stock / 15 / 63 / 73 / 21 / 0.4144/0.4282 / 106 / 111 / 191/195
56-440-8 / 22 / 58 / 69 / 17 / 0.501/0.501 / 108 / 112 206/210

The guy at comp cam said there would be definate kick in seat increase. Also will bd doing headers and reflash at the same time. Can't wait!!!!

Never done it myself on a Vortec V6, but please remember you will:
  • definitely need new adjustable rockers (Comp Cams rockers to fit the Vortec head)
  • probably need better valve springs (with corresponding machining of heads - I know that V8 Vortecs typically need machining or they need some sort of beehive springs to upgrade).
  • probably need valve guides in Vortec heads modified/machined for the much higher lift cam (I know that V8 Vortecs typically need this.
I would definitely talk to Comp Cams before proceeding unless you are already taking the heads off and planning to have this stuff done.
Get HPTuners or EFI Live and flash PCM yourself. Then you can tune at your own discretion, and change in the future. Plus it's a cool thing to get into. Just be sure to save your original tune somewhere safe! I have HPTuners, but only for the diagnostic capability (don't have the tuning upgrade to the software).

For headers be sure to get full length headers.

Good luck and best wishes!

p.s. I have a Comp Cams camshaft in my S10, but 2 more cyl and no fuel injection.

Cody at comp cams said no machining needed and I would need new springs. Was thinking of new rockers ,seals, etc while it's part any ways
