Engine Fan or Electrical Fan
Quick question. I have a '71 Blazer with a 454 that overheats when not moving. I'm working on getting it back on the road and want to eliminate this problem. Should I go with an electrical radiator fan in conjunction with the engine fan. Or should I have just the electrical fan? Can the electrical fan be tied the thermostat or will I always have to switch it on? I don't like the idea of having to flip a switch each time I drive it as I know I will forget? Looking forward to your advise!

I think it is pretty standard set up to have an electric fan with a relay controlled by a temperature sensor.
Does your mechanical fan have a shroud? Adding a shroud can make a big improvement if you want to keep things simple. I learned this lesson on my 68 Mustang. |
Hi there, yes the mechanical has a fan and the blazer still overheats when stuck in traffic.

Firstly, what have you done maintenance-wise? Thoroughly flushed the coolant system including the heater core? Installed correct amount of coolant mixture? Replaced the thermostat? Replaced the radiator cap?

Thermostat was replaced. Never thought about replacing the radiator cap. The cap looked newish. Suppose I can give that a try! Thanks

Check and flush radiator too. There is a reason for overheating. Should not be the case - unless you live in a place that has already 90 - 100 F.
