Fuel pump operation
Hey guys, I need to empty my fuel tank to replace the pump. Unfortunately, the tank has about 14 gallons in it.
The pump will run but does malfunction occasionally. So, which wires under the hood do I need to apply continuous 12 volts to pump the fuel out? I have the vehicle up on jack stands, and have removed the fuel lines. I've attached a hose to the pressure side pipe coming out of the tank. I'm getting fuel into five gallon container, but for only a few seconds as the pump cycles off. Yes, I am being very careful about fire. Thanks! |
There should be a test terminal right next to your fuel pump relay. Apply 12V to that to make the pump run.
But you don't necessarily need to drain the tank if you have a good jack to drop the tank. I don't think I've ever drained one. |
Okay, after several searches here and on the Internet, I got to where I need to be.
Found the relay in the glove box. It is the five pin version. Jumped pins 3 and 5 to run the pump. This tank does not have the quick disconnect hoses. They are screw-on and were pretty rusty. I finally found a length of hose to slip over the end of the out-pipe so that I could pump out the fuel. Yes, I have a motorcycle jack for letting the tank down. .................................................. .................................................. ..................... I'm not sure what's wrong with the engine. - It gradually began loosing power. It took far more accelerator pedal to handle the road I normally drive. Even the cruise had to force it to down shift to maintain speed where never before. Then finally it got extremely difficult to maintain 40mph on a hill that I had always crossed easily at 65 to 70 mph. - About the time the loss of power occurred, a rattle inside the CAT developed. The CAT still emits the chlorine odor and seems to not be plugged. - The fuel tank has been pressurized the last three or four fill-ups which was never the case previously. - Began to smell stale gasoline odor inside the vehicle over the last couple of months which may be related to the pressurized tank. I'll check that out when I get the tank removed. - It's past time for a fuel filter change. So, that's among the things I'm doing while I have it up on jack stands. - About time for an air filter - Changing the spark plugs for the first time (131k miles on them). Yep, got that one out that's so difficult to access. - No check engine light. However, I have not scanned for codes. |
Okay, I removed the fuel tank today and installed a new Delco Fuel Pump made in China! Sucks, but that's what it is!
The vent hose in the top front of the tank is a PITA to remove. Actually, I broke the nipple off the fitting. So, I had to glue it back on with some of that two-mix JB Weld brand stuff. Then I reinforced it with regular Kiwk JB Weld... worked fine. And, to make it easier going back, I used a rather long piece of 1/4 inch fuel hose. Removing the poorly engineered locking system holding the fuel pump level assembly was a bit of a challenge. But, I got it loose without any damage. Anyway, with a new fuel pump and a new filter, I'm not sure the problem will be solved as I described in the previous post... oh, and new spark plugs, Delco and made in USA. |
Yup as I've posted a few times the last few AcDelco and Delphi pumps I've installed for people have been made in China> A few have died in days, as far as I know the others are still running, So its really a toss up. Am I paying a really high price just for China junk
