Gear oil in motor

i have never seen anyone do this, the guy next door had his hood up so i went over to see if he needed help he is around 75 years old, he was dumping a jug of 80w95 in the engine of his honda civic, says he adds it between oil changes maybe a qt or two. This can't be good

Absolutely not! He is falling back on memories of engine maintenance from many years ago when tolerances were much greater and engine oil was nowhere as good as it is today. If you have a desire to kiss your engine goodbye, follow his example. :)
