Default Help: 98 trans 4x4

picked up a blazer at an auction and turns out the trans was bad and misssing 3rd. i haven't done much in the way of major repairs, but i gotta fix it or it's just a big waste.
so, i figured i'd start a thread to cover any question i'll come up with.
Year: 1998
Engine: 4.3
Trans: 4L60E
DT: 4x4

first question is: will a 4l60e from a 99 trans am work? modifications?

next question: now what? here's what i've done
1. jacked it up and set it on blocks on frame (dosen't wobble)
............. that's it...

thanks in advance for any and all help

I THINK the trans are the same.

heres whatcha do

Unbolt trans crossmember, remove driveshaft, unplug wiring from trans, shift linkages etc. when you remove the crossmember the trans is going to lean down and pull the motor back with it,which is good. it'll give you clearance you need to gain access to the bolts on the bellhousing. oh man wait back up,im not re-doing this im tired. You need to pull off the torque converter cover and remove the bolts that bolt the convertor to the flywheel. THEN remove the crossmember etc and let the trans slide down some, then pull the bellhousing bolts and put a board on the car jack or whatever your using to get it out and ease it back from the motor onto the jack and get it out!

Plus worry about the exhaust being in the way,im lazy,i just cut it off and pay to have it welded back together,IF its in the way.

^^sorry if this is pointless, its 1am,i had a 13 hour shift,im tired and wanted to help. goodnight!

edit: realized this was 4x4,you need to remove the front driveshaft too.

it's cool. that was a lot of help, and a bit entertaining. you basically said the same thing that i read before, just shorter and simpler

question: when it's tilted and i'm removing the bell bolts will the engine snap back into place? or is the method to leave a bottom bolt in and get everything level?

nother question: transferred case out before or with the tranny? i heard with tranny, but it un balances everything and make it a crap ton heavier.

i haven't started yet. i been a bit busy and whether sux.

oooooo more questions::: what else did the 2 piece 4L60E come in? still looking for a cheaper trans, the trans am guy hasn't gotten back to me.

Well, I hope the Trans Am guy hasn't gotten to you yet.
To make a 2wd 4L60E work in a 4wd application you will need to change out the tail shaft and shaft housing which is the last pieces to be removed on a rebuild of tranny.

So with that in mind, if you go with a 2wd tranny you are gonna have to do a complete teardown.

As far as the transfer case, your gonna have to pull it regardless to bolt to your new unit. Do you want to pull it on your back in the driveway, or on a work bench?

what;s a good way to hold the flywheel? and are those bolts hard to get out? i was having some trouble. how many things are plugged into the trans

I usually jam an extension or screwdriver between the teeth.
It takes some patience but they are not too tight.

Why did you pull the axles??

Are you sure you didn't pull both DRIVE SHAFTS??

The axles do not need to be pulled to drop the tranny, But maybe you found a new way to do it, I don't know.....

That's affirmative - 4wd output shaft is different.
