help with engine rebuild

Hey guys, im new to this forum but not to automotive forums. I have about 1000 post at mustangforums.com and i have a 2004 gt. My dad works his *** off to provide for us. He makes the money yet he still has the worst running car. Its a 1991 stock4 wheeldrive s10 blazer. Its been out of commission for a while and often has to got to the shop to get worked on. Im good with cars but havent really worked on his truck all that much. I think its been burning oil. It runs but not real efficiently. It lacks power. I want to rebuild it for him. The motor has 270000 miles on it and i think its about time. While rebuilding it are there any parts that can be installed that can increase the power. Id like it to be a little more powerful but I want the power to be at a usable rpm range. Im not looking for a lot or to swap in a 350, just a little bit more. Are there any rebuild kits for this engine with everything that i would need? Somebody point me in the right direction. Thanks alot, Eric

Being a '91, you should be able to use pretty much any of the aftermarket cams to gain some additional HP. A chip for the PCM would also help in that department as well.
Depending on how the block and crank are, you may end up with quite a bit more invested in a rebuild on that bottom end. You also will want to go through the heads, having the valves job done, checking the seats, making sure it is flat, etc. I guess what I'm getting at is that you may want to price out a remanufactured engine from a few suppliers just to find the most economical way of getting this done. I know that it can sometimes be cheaper to buy a reman, toss in a hipo cam and your induction setup, and move on down the road.
