Intermittent starting problem
Ok, me and "search" aren't on speaking terms again, so I'll just ask.
Twice this week I've went to start the Blazer, and it wont start. It turns over great, it just wont fire up. If you wait about 30 minutes, it will fire right up. Sound familiar to anyone??? This 99 4.3 runs like a top. Strong and smooth for a 4.3. That is, when it will start. |
RE: Intermittent starting problem
If the try to crank it, let it die, then leave the key in the crank position, does the security light flash?
Also have you seen the security light randomly turn on while youre driving? |
RE: Intermittent starting problem
I haven't noticed it the security light while driving. I'll try your other suggestion when I get home. I had to drive the PT to work tonight.

RE: Intermittent starting problem
It may not be intermittent. I tried to start it a few minutes ago and it wouldn't start. 16 degrees out side.
While the engine is turning over, the security light is out. While starting and release the key, the security light comes on. |
RE: Intermittent starting problem
I would put a new distributor cap on it,I had the same issue once in my 98 Blazer wouldnt fire but turned over great and when it did run it ran great, so I replaced the distributor cap and it fired right up, the little contacts that send spark to each plug wire in the cap were really white and had little grooves warn in them from the pickup so I replaced it and it has run great ever since, its a cheap fix like $25 for a new cap and pickup for the distributor from Auto Zone.

RE: Intermittent starting problem
Always a good place to start, but a corroded distributor cap will not cause the security light to illuminate.

RE: Intermittent starting problem
It didnt throw any codes or lights on mine when it happened which is why at first I figured bad gas or moister in the gas so I dumped some seafoam in it with no luck, until I swaped the cap with a new one.

RE: Intermittent starting problem
Well, I'd say its the fuel pump. I turned the key on and I never heard the pump spin up. With the key on, used the tip of needle nose pliers and pressed in the pressure test valve, nothing.
Auto Zone nor Advanced Auto had a guage that would fit. What say you? |
RE: Intermittent starting problem
Where is the fuel pump fuse?
|
RE: Intermittent starting problem
You have a fuel pump relay in your under hood fuse box, just look at the under side of the cover to locate which one it is and what you can do is pull out a different relay and put in were the fuel pump relay was to test and see if your fuel pump relay is bad or not. I had to swap a fuel pump on a 98 and its not a fun process at all and for my 98 its one of the years the pump and sending unit is 1 unit so you can replace just one or the other and it was $500 for a replacement fuel pump/sending unit [:@]and its located in the fuel tank so you will have to drop the tank to replace it, again [:@]not a fun process at all, next time I have to do it on a S-dime I think I will pay someone for the headache lol good luck hopefully its just the relay thats a easy fix :D
