Leak around Tranny (with pictures)

G'day Blazer-group.

We are currently in the process of fixing several issues with my 1999 4x4 Blazer.
While changing the oil, we noticed a rather persistent drip coming from (what appears to be) part of the tranny. In particular, it was this sinister metal bit: http://aphexmandelbrot.dreamhosters.com/data/Small1.jpg

The location of this dandy guy is a bit behind the oil drain plug - in front of the transmission pan. We are speculating on this potentially being part of the engine; however, I thought I'd fly it by the kind Internet folks to see if they (you) would have some clue... while we look for an exploded view of the area.

Because my car is amazingly photogenic, here are a few more pictures - just in case:

Another, which may also be part of the leak:

Thank you very much in advance.

Looks like it is coming from up top on the engine. Could be a valve cover gasket leak or possibly a fuel pressure sensor leak, something in that area.

Welcome to the site.
Its either an oil leak as Swart has pointed out or its a tranny leak.

Proper course of action will depend on which one it is.

That little round thing you have some great pic of, take it out, its just an access hole plug. Shine a flashlight up in the hole and look insdie, do you see and fluid in there, if so which side is it on? The engine or tranny side? Engine rear main seal. Tranny side-input gasket. Both require you to seperate them.

If it is clean on the inside it is more then likley an oil leak as Swat pointed out.

What color is the fluid? Looks brown in the pics (oil). But if its read, tranny fluid, provided your tranny fluid is still red.

You could also have a loose oil pan if you are getting oil down the back side of the pan inside the bell housing. A faulty rear main seal will tend to coat the front of the flex plate while a loose or faulty oil pan gasket will just run down the back side of the pan.
