lost 3rd and overdrive
 

1999 4.3 4wd. Was on the highway doing about 55 to 60 mph when engine started reving but was losing speed. Stopped and felt lines and return line from rad to tranny, top line from rad, was too hot to touch but the trans cooler was just warm. (Has cooler in front of a/c condensor hooked in series with rad) Checked fluid and smelt burnt. Drove home in 2nd and here it sits. Let it cool and took it for a ride but still f'd. Any ideas? Am I needing a rebuilt????? Great start to a summer!!!!!!!!!!!

sounds like it.

you could drop in a salvage yard unit for about half the cost. if you go that route find my tech article on removing the tranny in the do it yourself section. also make sure you use 1 quart of lucas tranny fix on the used tranny.
