Thats a hard wired ground. Check ground G102 at the rear of the right cylinder head. If that OK then there is a wire break or corrosion between the UHFB and that point.

So it will not crank or it will crank but will not start until you ground the relay pin?

Once you have it running it will die if you remove tht artificial ground at the start relay pin?

Starts and runs with the jump wire at relay with the key but dies when the jump wire is removed

OK so that G102 ground powers a lot of things including the starter relay and the fuel pump relay. They all join right after the UHFB and thats why supplying a good ground to any of them fixes them all. The break is somewhere shortly after the UHFB and the right rear head. You can either track down the damage in the wire loom or supply a new ground. Finding the fault is better because who knows how many other wires are damaged. That is a single black ground wire that exits the C2 connector near the UHFB on pin F7. That would need to be at least an 18 gauge ground wire. I have never worked on the UHFB so I dont know exactly where that connector is (under, just after, etc). We can find some connector info if you want to go that route.

I am sure that there are buss bars or wire bridges under that fuse box so the problem could be in the fuse box itself. Depends on how many other things dont work. It looks like most of the connectors are under the box but as I said we can do more digging if needed.

But I'll be safe just running a new ground till I can get it on a lift and drop the trans again

As long as the ground wire is big enough and a solid connection. You need it for starting, fuel pressure, headlights and other functions.
