I have a 1999 s-10 blazer 4.3 4x4 with 130,000k. the truck drives good but reverse doesn't work. when its shifted into reverse it acts as neutral. is this a common problem? i have no idea what to look for. also I have an engine knock. it sounds like the top end but im not sertain. the father in-law had it for the last year and he put really cheap oil in it. could bad oil cause this?

Bad oil shouldnt cause a knock. Sounds like you lost a gear if no R. Not to call you stupid but did you check to see if the trans is full.

Is this the sunshell failure? Can the sunshell go without losing 2,4,R (or is it 1,3,R)

what is the sunshell and how can i check it?

It's a part of the tranny. You're looking at a rebuild essentially to replace it.

If reverse is the only gear affected, then it is not the reaction sun shell. Sorry I cannot comment further at this point in time.

I am about to start taking apart my old tranny. (the one that has no reverse but has every foreward gear) and if i find out what is wrong i will post it on here. Hopefully in the next few days i will have something to share. Oh and if the 4l60e tranny is such a crappy tranny why didnt they have a recall on it. Just curious

Now just who said it was a crappy tranny? It isn't. If you see a lot of people posting issues with it, it's because GM made millions of them over the course of its production run, and it is simply the law of averages at work. The fact is that it is a robust transmission that has held up well in many applications.
