Normal Tranny Operating Temp??
 

I have a 96 blazer 4x4 with a 4L60E tranny in it and it has gotten warm before so i changed the fluid and put and aftermarket tranny cooler on it and i also installed a transmission temp gauge and i was wandering wat the normal operating temp was?

Just take it on a nice easy freeway cruise... that will be the normal operating temp. Then when you are in heavy traffic, off-roading, etc... you will know when things are getting hot.

I have glowshift trans temp and it sits about 140 give or take. But hot day (80+) mine will rise to 180-200 on the freeway when Im fighting for position, lol! Hope it helps!

Note: The rule of thumb I was told was; temp should sit about 80 over abient (experts correct me if im wrong?).

my gauge is a glowshift too...mine sits about 140 too but i took it on about a 2 hour drive on a 85 degree day and it got up to 180 so i didnt know if that was too hot or not cause i was used to it staying around 140.

where did you get your 2" suspension lift at?

Where is your temp sender mounted? Mine is mounted in the line between my rad cooler and aftermarket cooler. It was just the easyest spot for me to cut the line and add a 3/8 ****** 1/4NPT T for the sender(used a 1/4 to 1/8NPT Reducer). If the sender is in the trans it would proly read hotter. I figure mine is a good average, lol.

Most run of the mill ATF brands are good to about 200*F before oxidization sets in and breaks down the fluid. The newer synthetic fluids are good to 230-250*F. The fluid needs to reach around 120*F or may be a little higher (I cannot remember exactly) for the PCM to be happy and keep the torque converter locked in when it is supposed to be. Overcooling the transmission fluid can cause lower MPGs due to the TC staying unlocked as the PCM tries to heat up the fluid.

my sensor is in my transmission so it may read warmer like you said. I think the reason mine reached 180 that day was because it was about a 2 hour drive with alot of stopping and starting and some interstate driving and it was about 85+ that day.. i pulled a small 5x8 trailer with a riding mower and push mower on it this weekend with temps around 70 and it only reached 160.
