Rattling noise coming from exhaust.

I have a 1999 Chevy Blazer ls.
I have a rattling noise coming from my exhaust . Also I smell sulfur. The engine seems to be missing. When I but it in reverse the rearend shakes. This just started this morning. Please can anyone help

cleburne red 05-01-2019 03:05 PM

Got any codes for your cat?

I bet the cat has broken, and the pieces are in the muffler. Explains the sulfur smell

What about the engine and the rearend shaking I'm reverse???

What about the rearend shaking in reverse and the engine missfire.

All can be caused by a bad cat

Trip coverage 05-01-2019 03:52 PM

Sounds like an easy fix?

I thought it could.be a rear end problem.

cleburne red 05-01-2019 07:21 PM

Any check engine lights?

The rear end shake could be a different problem, but let's narrow down if you got a bad cat or not

Trip coverage 05-02-2019 12:49 AM

Check engine light is on.

Yes ,the check engine light is on. Put it on a micro mechanic. It's junk.
I don't get paid untill Friday. I'll let you know.

Thank you for your help.

I have had owned another blazer that had the same rattle. But it had no performance issues. Of course I had that one fixed as soon as I heard the rattle.
I let this rattle go for about a 1000 miles. I'm taking to my cheap exhaust mechanic first thing Friday. I really hope it's the catylitic converter that's causing these issues.

Most auto part stores will read the codes for free ......

Thanks for your help.

Would I do any damage to "the blazer"
If I drove her to AutoZone with a busted cat.

prob not - if back pressure got too high if the internals come's further apart it would just quit running due to lack of exhaust flow .......

Thanks for helping me out

just got it out of the exhaust shop. No symptom have been repair. With the exception of the rattle and the vibration of the rearend. It is still missing and popping.
One more thing this all started with no warning. It almost seems like someone sabatoged my truck.

OK, so the exhaust shop replaced the cat? And now the rattle and vibration is gone, but it still misses and runs rough?

Okay, yes the cat has been replaced with a straight pipe.
Took it to AutoZone. It threw 5 codes 2 0300
0171. And 2 0101.
The code reader says the blazer needs a fuel regulator.
Which makes sense because half of air filter is missing. Me and buddy are now tear apart the carb(injectors) to replace this part. Hope this fixes it.

cleburne red 05-03-2019 12:35 PM

Did you actually check the fuel pressure, or are you just throwing parts at it? Fuel pressure is super easy to replace, and can determine if the injectors or pump is at fault

Thank you for your help.

This is what was recommended.
Don't know.

If it helps we are in a full tooled logging shop.
I work in the logging industry. I have access to a full tooled shop.

And all the computer readers are locked up. Don't have access to those.

odat 05-03-2019 01:01 PM

You don;t need a code reader to check fuel pressure look at the sticky { how to check regulated fuel pressure } at the top of the second gen section and follow it step by step

cleburne red 05-03-2019 05:06 PM

Yeah, you can rent (for free) a fuel pressure tester at pretty much any parts store. Super easy to check. Can save you wasting money replacing the wrong part

0300 misfire - 0171 too lean - 0101 mas air flow / maf
All above can be caused by a bad cat low fuel pressure and such.
There is no code for a fuel regulator as the computer does not monitor fuel pressures -
Fix the air cleaner, clean the maf with cleaner made for it and do the fuel pressure tests 100% as sticky tells you too before you replace anything and spend money you don't need too spend ....
The failed cat was a easy guess now it's time to test and trouble shoot while you keep cash in wallet and wallet in hip pocket ......
