Rear main oil seal

I just b a 83 6.2l K5 im not a mechanic however I am mechanically inclined. is the rear main seal something I should have done at a shop or can I accomplish it in my driveway. was wondering what kind of problems I might encounter and was hopping for a worst case scenario

I would not call a rear main seal a driveway repair. I haven't worked on a 6.2L diesel, but on the gas engines, you really need to remove the transmission or engine to get access to it. I would think the same thing would apply.

How bad of a leak is it?

headhunter 03-04-2011 05:48 PM

its a slow leak but I travel upwards of 500mi a week so I have to get it fixed. my main concern is if I do the repair myself and the upper half of the seal wont push out and I have to loosen the crank what’s the Probability I will loose a bearing.

or are there any tips or tricks

have you tried the bottle of rear main bearing seal yet? I saw it at the parts store and the makers claim that in 500 miles the seal will swell up and the leak stops. if it still leaks add another bottle. but make sure you do not over fill the trans.. o riellys; advanced auot parts; auto zone. all have this product. If after all is done and you still have a leak then seal replacement is the call.
