Reverse while rolling in drive
So I can't find any similar threads to this, but what happens if you put the truck in reverse while rolling forwards?
Today I was in a mud parking lot so I put it in low gear, coming out of the parking lot I meant to put it in drive but it slipped over into reverse. I was going about 10-15 mph and the engine stalled quietly. I started it back up and no problems. Did I completely stall the engine? Or is this some sort of fail safe? I know most newer cars won't even switch into reverse while the vehicle's rolling forwards.

Depends on the speed.
There were about 6-8 of uscruising to Badlands Offroad park to go 4wheeling. One of hte guys in a fullsize van pulling a trialer loaded withone of his jeeps decided to show off. He pulled up alonside another in the groupand was going to put his feet up on the steeringwheel. While pulling off this manuver his foot hit the gear selector and shifted the truck into reverse while doing 70mph. He quickly shifted back to drive. However the damage was done. He tried reverse in teh gas station we stopped at to top off before playing. No reverse. Fortunately the truck was still undere warrenty and the dealer told him he busted up a pin, simple fix.
Yes, there are some safety features built in so you dont totally fry your tranny. Another safety feature is snaping a u-joint. I busted one of those while doing reverse drops on the Chevelle 30 years ago.

I'd much rather fry a tranny than snap a u-joint.. they also did that one on mythbusters
If the u-joint snaps while driving, if the car will catapult into the air, but no luck.
I think it's odd that the safety feature would work at 15mph rather than 70mph.
My friend.. I think he was driving a Ford Explorer sport, he hit a good jump on a road.. the front of the truck slammed down and tore the ground for the battery right out, he lost all power and couldn't use his brakes so he put it in reverse while going 60 down the hill. Of course the tranny didn't catch but it made a nice clinking noise and welded together, slowed the truck down to about 30 and finished it off with the parking brake right into a tree.
So why would the engine stall? The tranny didn't make any winding noise.. I got a few dash lights and didn't realize the engine was off until I noticed everything went quiet and I was slowly rolling.. started it back up and was off like nothing happened. Put it in reverse, it was fine luckily.
I mean my brother has a Saturn SL2 and he can put it in reverse no matter how fast he's going and the reverse lights go on but it stays in drive.. it didn't totally cut off the engine. Weird.
