Running very sluggish and rich
Hey guys. I am having problems with my 86 Blazer. I have the 350 small block with a edlebrock proformer 650 cfm. I recently brought this truck and it had head gasket problems. So i have changed the head gasket, plugs and leads, she now starts and runs. The problem is she is running rich blowing white smoke from the exhaust and really sluggish, and lags and stalls out if i accelerate too hard.
I have followed the engine timing correctly and set the timimg to 10deg before tdc. I have tried the basic idle mixture screws on the front of the carb but nothing seems to work. If any one can help or give me a few pointers that would be great. |
Running rich with white smoke
White smoke usually indicates water being burned. Do you have coolant in? If you do and the exhaust smells sweet then I would look to the intake gasket or the head gasket. A rich condition would cause a heavy unburned fuel smell at the exhaust. With no computer controlling the fuel then no over compensation is occurring.

sounds like somewhere in installation something went wrong.
new head bolts? everything torqued to spec in right order? (cant cheap out here) edit : this guy below me is right too |
I forgot to ask if you had the heads checked. If you ever take them off you should have them checked for cracks.

I replaced all gaskets, bolts and torqued them correctly i ensures all debris was removed and cleaned.. |
id say its that edlebrock carb giving you a fit. I dont like them. How many turns out are the fuel screws?

I think it could be the carb as i have just screwed them both fully in and the engine didnt stall at all. |
Ah,it is indeed the carb then. Im a fan of holley, and quad. the quads are a fit to tune, but if tuned correctly they can be the best carbs for street.
