Sticking Speedometer
 

I just recently bought a 1997 Chevy ZR2 Blazer with a manual transmission and approx 96,500 miles. At highway speeds the needle of the speedometer sticks. Between 0-45 mph it works fine, but once you hit 50 it becomes jerky, generally moving in increments of 5, and once the speedometer hits 60, it stays there until I reach about 75mph, when it then moves up to read 65. (My GPS displays my current speed so I know how fast I am going.) When decelerating, the needle will stay where it is until I hit about 50 when it will drop to the correct speed and start functioning normally. Any ideas what may be causing this? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Most likely is a faulty cluster.

Sometimes I have seen where someone has removed the needle for whatever reason and pressed it on too tight, causing it to drag on the face of the gauge itself.

How hard would it be to take the cluster out so I can check for rubbing?
I just read somewhere that it may be a faulty speedometer cable, think that's plausible?

Your speedometer is electric. No cable.

Not too difficult. Just have to remove the dash trim and then pull off the clear bezel on the cluster (you do not actually have to remove the cluster). Just do not drop any screws!

Ok, I'll try accessing the cluster after work today and see if that's the problem. Thanks for the help!
