timing problem Blazer 2001

I have a problem with my Blazer 2001 4wd.

It misfires and runs very rough.

I checked the timing with the engine at TDC 1 Cyl Compression stroke and the rotor was about 60 degrees of so i put it back at the 6 position everything back, tried to start, nothing.
I rechecked it and again the rotor was 60 degrees off.

Question is this a distributor problem or a problem with the oil pump shaft?

Wonder if the gear on the distributor is stripped. I would not pull it yet wait for more answers. I am no pro.

The distributor is completely mechanical other than the cam sensor on it. So that being said I would pull the distributor and check the teeth on the gear. If all looks good spin the shaft with the cap off to make sure it is spinning freely. If all is good there I would inspect the gear on the cam. That of course is easier said than done. If you don’t have an inspection camera I would recommend using a phone with a good camera and light and try videoing the gear as you turn the engine by hand. Those two are your most likely culprits.

There are two timing marks on the balancer. It sounds like you lined up the wrong one when you checked the timing the first time. It probably wouldn't run at all if it were actually 60 degrees off.

It is a bit different replacing the distributor on that engine. Wasn't there a place to start like a mark some place that lines up?

There's a "6" mark on the distributor body.

Sounds like you just got the distributor in wrong but you might want to take the cap off and have someone crank while you watch rotation of the distributor rotor. Any jerking or stopping is indicative of a major problem with distributor gear or timing chain. But doubtful is that bad. In any case you should not be able to turn the rotor back and forth - no slop in gear.

After that might as well pull the distributor out and visually check the distributor gear for wear at this point (common problem which ends up electrically damaging the cap/rotor). If gear is OK, replace the cap/rotor, drop it in as described (you will need to turn the oil pump shaft so distributor drops all the way in, correctly), and get it running. Check cam sensor retard with a capable scanner. Should be 0 +/- 2 degrees. Elongate bolt hole in clamp to adjust if necessary.
