Transfer box, removal
 

1987, V6, auto, 4WD. Have a bad leaking seal at the end of the transmission. Need to remove the transfer case, to get at it. Have disconnected both drive shafts, the 4WD linkage, spedo cable, and the vacuum lines. Also removed the the two bolts that go through the mount, into the bottom of the case. What next?

I would drain the t/case oil, support the transmission, remove the crossmember and then the bolts attatching the t/case to the tranny.

Jack up the tranny and remove the cross brace, lower the tranny onto a jack stand with a board on top. Never lift the tranny by the pan unless you have a board spread the distance of the pan, you dent that pan and you will have problems.

Remove the 5 or 6 bolts attaching the t-case to the tranny adapter and slide it off. She may puke some fluid if you tip her, and she weighs roughly 100 pounds. Sounds like you did all the hard work, that shift linkage can be a PITA!
