transfer case problems

hi Guys and Gals,
I just bought a 1995 Chevy Blazer 4X4 4.3L with Auto Trans. my problem is i had to change the rear seal on the Transfer Case and when I drove down the road it would completely stop pulling. Transmission wouldn't engage at all I stopped and turned the ignition off and restarted the engine. It would engage and get me moving. After about a mile it would disengaged again. I used this method to limp the truck home. Would the fluid level being low in the Transfer case cause this or do I have a bigger problem?

I do not think that is a transfer case problem. I have not dove into a transfer case yet so there is a possibility that is the case. You could have a solonoid or other electrical issue. Could you explain what you mean by engage? I see a lot of people describing it that way but do you mean it will not shift into any gear? Does it just sit and seem like it's in neutral?

The fluid level being low in the transmission could cause this also so make sure you check both levels and diagnosing can go from there.

yes the transmission acts like it is in neutral and will just sit there...I have checked the fluid in the tranny and it is full bright pink and doesn't smell burnt. I ask a guy today and he said that there was a temp switch in the tranny that if the transfer case got hot enough it would cause the tranny to protect itself. Have you heard of this happening?

How many miles are on it? There is a temperature sesor but it is used for torque converter lockup. Could have other purposes but I do not know.
I'm going to stick with an electrical problem or it could be a complete failure and needs rebuilt.

it has over 200k miles on it.

"I have checked the fluid in the tranny and it is full bright pink and doesn't smell burnt."

Bright Pink??? strawberry milkshake colored??? new fluid is red... old fluid is dark red to brown. if it looks like a strawberry milkshake you have a bad trans cooler.
temp sensor is in the trans and over temp (+275) puts it into hot mode different shift patterns and F/T TCC in 4th.
