Transmission flush
Hey
I have a 1995 S10 with 200 000 km.. And the transmission has been a little of its game lately, it waits waay to long to shift gear and the shifting isn't that smooth :) So to try fixing the problem the easy and non expensive way, i am planing to change the filter and flush the transmission my self. But this is the first time i am doing this kind of job, so i was wondering if there is anyone of you guys that have done this job before and have some experience to share. I have seen some videos on youtube of people flushing their transmission the easy way, by just disconnecting the piping that comes out of the transmission cooler, and from there draining out around 2 quarts with the transmission pump, and refilling the same amount, and repeating the prosess untill the fluid that comes out is clean. The workshop takes around 4500,- NOK (~800,- USD) to do the job, so that's not an option when i paid ~2000,-USD for the car. I have ordered 25l ATF oil (YTE025 CARLUBE DEXRON III 25 liter) this oil is probably not known by so many of you, but the dealer says that it wil run good on any transmission that needs any of this oil codes "ATF-A, D, D2 or IID" , I ordered this much simply because it was almost the same price as 3 5l boxes. I payd 180,-USD for the oil And i have also ordered transmission filter and gasket that i plan to shange before starting with the flushing. And if you were wondering, I am from Norway =) Sorry about the bad english, i hope it's not to hard to understand  Thanks fore any replies :) Terje Strand |
Changing the transmission fluid and filter on the 95 blazers is a fairly significant undertaking because it is required to remove the transmission brace from under the pan where the transmission filter is located. I don't know if you are saying you have a blazer SUV or just the truck, but if you have the SUV I can be of some assistance because I have done it myself.
One thing I recommend is installing a drain plug in the pan, once you have the pan off of the vehicle. This will allow you to drain most of the transmission fluid very easily from the vehicle periodically and will be much faster and easier than doing it the way you described with the cooler lines. However, you need to be careful where you place the plug because the internal section of the drain plug assembly can possibly interfere with the structures above it once you put the pan back on. I believe the drain plug kit I installed was made by Dorman/Motormite. |

It's because he's in Norway. Things are really expensive there compared to the U.S.

That's fore sure :D the cheapest trans oil at my local workshop costs around 20USD a quart. so 180USD fore 25quart's is a good deal fore me you can say :)
My blazer is the 4 door LT type. I know about the difficulties of taking down the transmission oil pan to change the filter, and i don't see it as a problem. Installing a drain plug would be a good idea. I can't say that I really understand the mindset of the engineer that designed a oil pan without a drain plug. :icon_doh: The reason i am draining the transmission not only with taking down the oil pan, but also through the cooler lines is because when draining down the oil pan, you still have 50% of the old oil in the transmission (most of it in the converter). And the only way to get it out is to flush the transmission. By either doing it the way i described earlier, or by connecting the cooler lines to a expensive flushing machine, like they do at the workshop. And i don't see the point of changing only 1/2 of the oil. If I am going to do the work of changing the oil and filter. I might as well change all of the oil, not just half of it, that's just stupid if you ask me :) |
