The play in the rotor seems excessive to me. Good observation. I would think that would show up/result in Cam Sensor Retard being off (you previously tested this as good) but based on this observation a worn distributor gear will be the next thing to physically check for if the compression tests are good.

George, he has identified the misfire/rough idle as cylinder 4 by injector balance test and a visual of the spark plug. He has a new cap/rotor/wires/spark plugs. I'm trying to follow a logical train of diagnosis and not throw out a bunch of stuff (all at once) to check that can cause misfires. Yes we may get into one or more of the test that you mention, but we don't want to overwhelm or confuse him right now. Please let him finish the compression tests before we go on.
The most elegant way I have seen an ignition drop cylinder test performed is at the distr cap or plug end with a grounded probe. Like Les says you need to ground the spark output so you bring a grounded probe up to the distr cap posts/boot and as you pull the plug wire off you offer the probe as a ground and the spark jumps the cap to ground. I’ve got a video around here somewhere if your interested. Good luck, George |

Gentlemen, My apologies for the hiatus. Due to the nature of my employment I was abruptly away for a while but have returned. If I could have updated on the matter, I would have. I am now back home, and due to the current used car market I plan on trying to continue the fight with this blazer to see if I can get the engine misfires figured. I took some time to read back through my thread and watch my videos. I think my current course of action is going to be replacing the lower intake manifold gaskets and the distributor. I feel that if either of these do not fix the issues then it has to be something further internal IE: pistons/piston rings or something worse. If that is the case then the repairs are far beyond my resources or my abilities to repair and the issues will be a lost cause. Looking for your insight on my current plans, if you don't mind. Again, my sincerest apologies for the hiatus. Thank you. |
