You may have had the distributor in 180° out. It's a 4-stroke engine. Engine turns over twice for each distributor rotation.

Sounds like the mechanic may be confused on timing marks and what to line up (rotor points to stamped 6, not #1 terminal when engine is at TDC#1 on compression stroke), but nonetheless if the SES light is functional (comes on with KOEO) and it is not on with the engine running - then the distributor is definitely in on the right tooth and he did a good job for you no matter how he accomplished it.
