Default Thermostat replacement...

I need to change my thermostat. I noticed, while driving, that my temperature gauge was reading kinda low. It's at the 155 degree mark. I connected my scanner and sure enough the reading came back at 160 degrees.

So, I went down to Advance Auto and purchased a Stant 195 degree thermostat and inquired about also needing a gasket. When they looked it up, they told me there was no gasket required and that the Stant already has the seal.

I came home and looked at my truck manual under thermostat replacement and it states, "replace gasket (if used)". So, this is of no help to me.

Is there a gasket for the thermostat or is the seal enough? I'd like to know before I replace the thermostat so that I can have the part for the switch out.

Thanks.

I can't recall which brand I used...but it was like $9 so maybe AC Delco? It had the gasket built in..I asked and it took the guys like 10 minutes trying to find one that had a gasket, then the manager walked up and pointed out the gasket on the t-stat. Havn't had any problems since!

If the Stant does not require a gasket, that's the 'if used' part.

Thanks for the assistance. I was able to change the thermostat this afternoon. No gasket, just the o-ring that was supplied with the Stant thermostat. My scanner now reads 198 degrees. I made sure to top of the Dexcool and I will keep an eye on it for the next few days.

Hi

I recently purchased a 97 Blazer with 90k miles for a winter vehicle, it has seems to run cool with my wife complaining that the heat was not hot enough, especially compared to my 1500HD, the temp guage is reading around 150ish, is this "standard" for the Blazers or is a 195 degree thermostat "stock". If 195 is stock I'll replace the current one.

Thanks in advance for any info

Royce

195 is the standard thermostat, but the gauge might not be correct. There is also the possibility that the heater core is plugged.

195 is stock and highly recommended.
When your replaceing your broke thermostat flush the rad and heater. 50/50 mix and enjoy the heat.
