1985 K5 Emmision Problem

1 Attachment(s)
My truck won't pass a visual smog inspection in NV. They say it is missing parts. I not sure what these parts are and would like some help identifying them so I can call around for the parts. There is a missing hose that went from red circle to red circle in photo. I guess the valve on the right stopped working and the hose melted off. Thanks for your help. Have a good day.

That is the AIR (air injection reaction) system that pumps fresh air into the exhaust system to improve catalytic converter efficiency. If there is exhaust leaking from the check valve (circled on the left of the picture), the check valve needs to be replaced prior to replacing the hose or you will simply burn up the new hose.

Is there a way to check the check valve or should I just replace it. Also, the air pump doesn't have a belt on it. Do you think that would cause it to fail as well? If so, where does the belt from the air pump wrap around too?

Thank you very much for the info, now i can call around for the parts and not feel like such a dummy. Have a great day.

As stated, if there is exhaust leaking from the check valve, the valve is bad. It is supposed to keep the exhaust pressure in the exhaust system only allowing fresh air from the air pump.

I would think the lack of a belt on the air pump would cause a failure of a visual inspection as well. The air pump should drive off the crankshaft and possibly wrap around the water pump pulley. You can check out Autozone.com's repair guides for belt routing diagrams.

Thank you very much for your help.

On the '86 the belt runs from the AIR pump to the crankshafet pulley in the grove closest to the fan. It does not engage any other pulleys. At least on mine. I did have a local mechanic tell me the the pumps go bad and to check operation by hand turning prior to belt installation or you could just burn off a belt.

Thanks for the update on the 86'. I changed out all the smog stuff from pick-n-pull and picked up a new air pump and the truck would still not pass, running too rich. Mechanic suggested buyin a rebuilt carb from Summit. Anyone every rebuilt a carb? Are there rebuild kits available? I guess my carb is a electronic (not sure what that refers to).

The mixture solenoid on the electronic quadrajets often goes bad. Your best bet would likely be to buy an already rebuilt carb. The last time I looked into rebuilding an electronic q-jet, not all of the solenoids/etc were available. Not sure if that is still true as that was a long time ago. I've rebuilt too many standard q-jets to count with great results.

dumb emissions checks all they do is cause problems, glad i dont have any here

If I lived 30 mile further I wouldn't have to mess with smog. Thanks for the advice on the carb. Summit sells a rebuilt one.
