89 K5 Blazer starts right up , idles for 3seconds and dies..

We put in a new fuel filter didn't work. Pulled the main fuel line going into the tbi and when you hit the key barely any fuel came out. but some did. shouldn't it spray? Could this be egr valve? Or fuel pump. You can hear the pump come on when you hit the key, but i am thinking it isn't getting enough pressure. I am getting the blazer from a friend 70 miles away. I have drove twice now and haven't come home with it. I would love to go prepared tommorow so I will end up with it home tommorow. Any help will be greatly appreciated. It is a 350FI, appears to be pretty stock. If it is the fuel pump, are there any instructions online to remove and replace it. Thank you.

You need 8-10 psi for a TBI motor. You should verify the pressure with an inline gauge fitting. Some of the more expensive fuel pressure gauge setups come with the proper fitting.

thanks for the fast reply

where do i get one and where do i hook it up. On the main fuel line behind the tbi?/

You should be able to pick up a fuel pressure gauge from any autoparts store. Just check that it comes with the proper fitting before purchasing it.

And yes, the inline adapter fitting goes between the throttle body and the main line into the throttle body.

I'll try that tommorow

Does it sound like a fuel pump to you>?

Fuel pump

If you want to try a cheap fix, change the filter, quick and easy. That might help too. The Fuel regulator could be an issue too, but don't buy it. buy the Tbi rebuild kit, if it is a tbi in '89(I have a '90 and it is). Anyways the kit was like $26.00 and it came with the diaphragm that the regulator needs. Hope it helps

I'm getting ready to

go pick it up on a trailer and bring it home. Went there earlier today. Local mechanic said it has to be the relay. Don't know. I'll let you know.

hey guys

i finally got the thing home. where is the fuel pump relay on these trucks. thanks.

swartlkk 01-19-2010 06:23 AM

It will be on the firewall. It should be the one closest to the passenger side fender if there is more than one.

blbikerood 01-19-2010 06:09 PM

Well it wasn't the relay

We put on a new fuel filter and a brand new relay from Oreilly's. Truck will still start and idle for about 4 seconds and that is it. No parts store has a fuel pressure gauge in our area. As long as i keep fuel in the carb it runs and sounds great. I just bought the truck and have never driven it. I hope to get it going soon. Thanks.
